one year I made around $75K in my regular job and got a 1099 for $605 for consulting work I did on the side. I had to pay $300 more in taxes because of it. pissed me off because I could have just billed them less 1 hour and not had to report it at all!

If you receive a 1099-MISC, you might be able to write off a few things...such as a computer.
