well, my fenders are not rolled at all. oh, and i'm running on the factory 99RS wheels, which i believe are 7 inches wide.
i'm not trying to state this as fact or guidelines for anyone else... just stating my experience.
i'll just get my coilovers rebuilt and put them back on... no rubbing with those things.

never rubbed with my lowered car. I've been driving 225/50/16s for a 50k+ on my WRX and I've never heard any rubbing. Maybe stiffer springs don't let my car lean so much?

really!?

(end sarcasm)
yeah... i know that stiffer springs limit body lean...

as anyone that knows my car can attest, the setup i had before i put the stock stuff back on was stiff enough.

fyi - i'm a bit of a suspension ****.

and when you go from Bilstein PSS9 coilovers with 40mm shock bodies and 275lbs front and 225lbs rear springs back down to stock with 20mm shock bodies and boring *** factory spring rates... yeah. huge difference.
but, well, thats what i get for blowing out the seals on the front driver's side coilover... then again, maybe i shouldnt have jumped the RS in the first place...

if you get tires that are 20mm wider than your factory tires, and you still have your factory suspension, be ready to hear some tire rub.
in all the months that i've driven on my 225 tires with my coilovers, i've only once ever hear tire rub... i wont say where i was, or how fast i was going.
but today, i took 'the scenic route' to get home after work, and i was being very mellow versus how i'd usually drive that sort of road. i was given an unexpected dosage of tire rub on the factory suspension. SUCKY.
so yeah...

GD body can fit much W-I-D-E-R tires... even wider tires on 05+ STI.

beyond that, i've done lots of hard twisty road driving and never rubbed once...so, the point is that the GC will not rub on anything wider than 215 depending on your suspension setup. i'm sure if i put forester suspension on my GC, that it'd be nearly impossible to rub because of the lift...

If you want to avoid rubbing on stock suspension, you should also pick a higher offset or "more correct" offset wheel.

Well thats actually not true for all GC's - I happen to have 225 width RE-01R's on stock suspension on a 96 Impreza OBS wagon with absolutely no rubbing at all (even with quick U-turns and twisty roads), fenders unmolested! It looks pretty darn close to rubbing though...
