hit up tirerack.com and check out their tire guide that rates tires in different sections such as wet traction and others

First of all, hanks all for the reponses! The few that I had looked at, like the falken, toyo, and the sumitomo all received good wet traction ratings ~8ish or something, so thats comforting. However, people tend to be biased sometimes, especially when they've plopped down hundreds of dollars to get a set of tires they're gonna keep for a while, which is why I posted here

another thing to consider when looking at tire rack ratings: everything is relative. a rater rating an 8 in the wet for a uhp summer might be comparing it to other summer tires and would probably not give the same rating when comparing to an all-season based on their expectation.

For the very few hours where the temperature dips below 40F or so, you should be very careful as the tires get hard and less grippy. With that in mind, you should be fine so long as you have tread designed to evacuate water.

No offense dude, but I don't think that had anything to do with your tires! lol

A good summer tire (ie S-03 or pilots) is just as good or better than all-season tires in the rain.

Snow, slush, ice and freeezing conditions are where summer tires should not be used.

That said, there are no "winters" in the BAy Area. If by winter you mean rain...what location other than death valley and maybe monterey see no rain in the summer?

This was my concern... although it doesn't snow here, it does get into the 40's and sometimes the 30's... and it's unclear at what cold temp the summer tires get too hard. I guess though once you drive a bit they warm up... so just be careful at night/early morning and take it easy particularly before you've warmed up the tires.

The rest of the nation doesn't know what it means to hit 30's but not snow. By the time that happens in their part of the nation, they've already slapped on winter tires.
