Yea not sure on the terminology used on that diagram but even so if you look at the sections defined as catback you wont see a kit in between them.

If you have an after market downpipe already do you have on that replaces both cats or only one?

I know... I made a mistake and meant to say the midpipe also. But is that terminology wrong? If so, is the midpipe what is labeled as the rear exhaust pipe?

I will probably be getting a shorty DP so that I can just throw the stock catback and midpipe (or rear section of DP) on to pass smog.

I wouldn't risk it. Spend an hour putting your cats back on to save having to go back and possible fines.

If you care about smog fines, just go to a test only site to make sure it passes. If it doesn't pass they'll let you go fix it and try again and it's usually free until you pass.

Also, for just quick 'terminology' hint, it's called a "cat-back" since it's everything back of the cat

Would a catted down pipe pass smog with a Borla hush? Any thoughts?
Think the down pipe is an Invidia (was on the car when purchased from dealer)

If your stock heat shield is there, they'd have a hard time telling the difference between a catted aftermarket dp and the stock one. I don't think you'd have any problem unless you go to a real **** smog tech.

Unfortunately, no heat shield. Will have to look into the Gruppe-s heat shield when smog time comes around. Got a VF-34 so, I'm guessing the stock heat shield won't fit?

I think it's the DP that makes the shield not fit, as I have a VF-35 and my shield is cut on the pipe side, not on the turbo side. The gruppe-S shield is a bit more flashy compaired to the stock shield

just because it's painted...

Hopefully the Gruppe-s shield will fool them. Mike (UkNoob) told me of the story where a WRX owner was pulled over, the cops popped the hood and thought nothing was out of the ordinary.

can always hope that will be the case. Since I'm in the Military I am considering changing registration to home state of Florida

ok here it is from a certified technician no you wont pass smog with your catless set up unless you get it done by someone who is breaking the law. no way your stock catback system is going to cleanup the emmissions that come out of one of these cars. you must have the cats inplace to clean up the emissions. even though its just idle and 2500 rpm test its not going to pass without a cat.
