Short of flying off the road or hitting a babyhead-sized rock with your suspension, you're just gonna get mud all up in the bottom and in your wheels and those wash right out.

*see pansies thread*
Bunch 'o effin' pussies around here. Seriously. I just don't get all wheel drive "street" Subarus. They're bred for driving on the dirt folks!

What's gonna get damaged.. it's just dirt! I kick up gravel, so I guess I could put little scrapes in my paint job, but I've seen way more damage (busted suspension, mostly) from group drives on pavement than on dirt (basically, none). Hell, I've got more scrapes from cone eating than from dirt driving.

Yes, it rocks. Yes, Subies are made for this. Yes I cannot wait till I get my 4x4 (not AWD) Suby back to go play in the dirt. Yes, it's fun - but to say you cannot hurt your car?? WTF? I mean, the car that this thread is about is shown driving around with part of it's bumper torn off. Truly - if you have not seen parts get torn off, mangled and even cars getting seriously screwed up then you have not really been offroading.
Every time we would go romping out at Hollister (Pathy, Jeep, etc) we always see someone limping out with broken parts. I saw someone seriously mess up their truck up on the playground. Wonder if someone told them nothing would break...

So counting up the damage I've seen... I've seen an EVO bumper ripped off at a rallyX because it was so darn low, but the driver was jazzed it happened. I can't remember even cosmetic problems with Subarus except for when the car goes off. Have you seen anything more serious?
Maybe I'm just 'lucky', but I've seen far worse damage the paved group drives I've been on. Usually a car slides into a ditch and BAM! all the suspension bits are ripped out on one of the wheels.

I wasn't talking to anyone specifically, just commenting on the general nature and tendencies of most people on this board towards driving on dirt and dirt drives in general.

msgsti217: Looks like lots of fun mudding. Check out www.dirtyimpreza.com if you haven't already.
I hope you make it out to Ridgecrest for the school or rallyx on Sunday - they're both fun if you've never done them before. The school is pretty hardcore - lots to learn about reading notes etc., with separate dirt driving and co-driving breakout sessions. You'll probably be trying left-foot braking techniques, too.
www.formularallx.com is having lots of socal events this year - I bet you'd enjoy them. There's lots up here this year, too.

The first day was rally school - morning was lots of explanation about how rallies work, how to read jemba and 'tulip' notes, how a rally is run and how you fit in as a team.
Second half is a breakout where drivers get seat time - how to do some 4-wheel drifting, left-foot braking, slalom. Co-drivers learn how recce, prep notes (very important) and control the driver.
Really get to appreciate how the driver is a twitch-monkey concerned with driving accurately and safely while the navigator is the brains of the operation.

The second day is rallycross where you can put some of your newfound driving skills to work.
Once you do this school, you'll understand what it takes to run in stage rally (rollcage required).
You'll also understand how to run in Time-Speed-Distance road rallies (on roads and no rollcage/helmet required) of which there are plenty in SoCal..
Speaking of which, ITN's 'training wheels' beginner road rally is the following week (23rd) which I recommend as well (this one happens in daylight) and is great fun.. and free for first-timers, I believe. This one happens on paved roads.

To answer your question, No, I would NEVER buy my child a sports car in their young age (to spare their lives) but please dont hate on somebody that is in that situation, it just comes across as jealousy.
Do you know this dude? Just because somebody is spoiled (aka, very fortunate) does not automatically mean they are a brat. Judging buy his posts, he seems very calm/reasonable.
