I work off Amphitheatre at a startup during the summer. The commute from the East bay SUCKS (237 to 880N is completely packed during rush hours). Also, 101 North from SJ to Mtn. View also sucks pretty badly (look at 511.org during commute times to find out). I would recommend finding a place in Mtn. view to save yourself an hour or two a day. Well worth the addt'l expense.

I get around this by working from home until rush hour is over and leaving before traffic hits. (3:45-4pm).

If you love living in the Bay Area and can own your own home without being house poor or getting something in the ghetto or falling apart, I'd say it's pretty damn well worth it. You own it. It feels good and for my dime that's money well spent.

East bay is falling because of overstock. You'll get much better prices in the east bay.

Pennisula Southbay (mtn view, cupertino, sunnyvale) are all low inventory and highly desirable so prices are high. They have no more land to develop so inventories stay low.

East bay on the other has tons of land, more inventory, and too many ghetto people bringing prices down. (not saying it's ghetto there, I'm just saying there are a bunch of ghetto people living amongst regulars that are effing up the value)

This is a good by-the-numbers look at current conditions in San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County and Monterey County:

LifePlaza,

Another option is to live somewhere relatively close to the caltrain line...... I am not %100 sure but I believe google has shuttles to and from the local caltrain station (you are going to google yes?). That way, you can live anywhere from SF to Gilroy along the caltrain line and take the train to work. Another option is that light rail stops at the same station (Mt. View) as caltrain so you could use light rail to get to mt view and then the google shuttle to work (or ride a bicycle).

I used to work in the google neighborhood and yes driving there from just about anywhere usually sucks bad.

I am selling my place in Mtn View. It will be on the market in a week or so. When are you coming up. You can stop by and take a look at it. It sounds to be right in your price range as well. It is a townhouse, 2bdrm, 2.5 bath, split quad level, attatched garage. It's about 1500sqft. Pretty nice acutually. Everybody loves my place. It's pretty hip. My wife is a realtor for Coldwell Banker.

Ok if you Don't like North Richmond try Central ( it'sB.A.R.T. accessible) so transportation is easy.

I would go for this little gem in West Richmond @ just under $200k on the water. about 5 miles from BART.

Note the fact that there are no bars, that means it's an upscale neighborhood Views of SF.
