The answer is: oil which surrounds the shell is an irritant.

A native of Brazil, the cashew nut comes from the cashew tree, which produces a double nut. The nut is found on the lower end of the cashew apple (also eaten locally). Cashews belong to the same plant family as poison ivy and the shells' oil has been to known to blister the skin and produce a noxious smoke when roasted.

Weird, I ALSO produce a double nut and have been known to produce noxious smoke when I'm roasted. I must be a ****in' cashew!

Cashews don't grow in a shell. They are actually a part of the male reproductive organs of a small gopher-like animal in China called the gazhou. No one eats cashews in China because they are grossed out.
