Kind of a contradiction there. car doesn't matter, but parts of the car does?

Gutted interior+ rcomps + stiffer suspension + beater car he got for free = pretty awesome car. Lightweight, super sticky tires, stiffer suspension, a car with zero financial impact if he crashes... all that plus a track instructor's experience would of course lead to great times.

Of course it's not 100% of the reason he was so fast, I'd say it's 75% driver, 25% car. You can only push the physics of a car so hard.
-Novice driver w/ GT3, and an advanced driver w/ stock miata, the advance driver will be faster.
-Medium driver/GT3 vs Adv. driver/stock miata, medium driver might have a chance to keep up, but i'd still put my money on the miata.
-Adv Driver w/ GTR vs Adv driver w/ spec miata vs Adv driver w/ GT3... really depends on the driver, and would be alot of fun to watch.

Wow, what an awesome offer and a cool move! That sounds like a lot of fun and I would really like to do that, but I am not some kind of great driver or anything. I can offer everything I have but your best teacher is LOADS of laps. The coolest thing ever would be if we could do this when my '95 Impreza is running. I am supposed to be taking to a shop in two weeks to get the wiring finished.

It will be hard for me to do because of stuff in my life, but if I could just join you at a track day that would be fun I am sure. You don't need to pay for me, I would have a blast being there. A weekday is a great choice because you are much more likely to not have traffic issues, and I find there is often a better crowd because it's a little harder to get to a weekday trackday, so the people who want it more are there.

I have a friend who is an actual instructor, competition driver, and one of the two people I consider to be great drivers. If I could get him to come, we could both pitch in and pay for his day, and that would be pretty rad.

BTW - so excited, I found a vid of my beefcake Celica on the old Sears Point "short course" when it was under renovations. This is one of my favorite videos, and one of only two of my cars on track sadly. This car weighed around 3600lb with me at the wheel and my friend and I were both in the car all day that day. Car was on Bridgestone RE-750's.

oh btw, one other thing that i thought of earlier today...

so here's a hypothetical situation: let's say me and my friend both go to the track in our daily drivers (for the sake of argument, let's say we're both driving e92 m3s) and run 10 timed laps and I beat my friend 10 out of 10 times by ~1 second. now let's say we do another 10 laps, only this time i hop into my old mkiv gti and my friend continues to drive the same m3. based on your previous argument, i should then beat him 10 out of 10 (or at the very least, the majority of time) again?

EDIT: i guess the point that i'm trying to make is, if the same driver tracks an e92 m3 and a mkiv gti, the e92 is going to have a faster time and it's going to be more than a second faster than the gti... that is not debatable. so if the gap between my friend and myself when we both drive the e92 m3s is ~1 second, how is it physically possible that i could beat him?

We'll probably have the showdown within the next 2 months if all goes well. Timing and money are two major factors right now.


Next time I go to the track I'm going to attach all my Flip Cams to the car in various angles (Front lic plate looking forward, between the driver and passenger inside the car, and a side-wheel arch cam for some eye candy). For some reason I have 3 flip cams and they are PERFECT for this kind of thing... So small and sturdy that you can literally duct tape it to your car and not worry about it falling off. Thats what Ive done in the past and it works wonderfully.


Here's a video with a flip cam duct taped to the front lic plate. You'll see how steady the picture is and how little wind noise there is considering that there is a ton of wind present the whole time yet there is no noise, pretty damn cool actually.

The road above was shut down for a photoshoot... You can see one of the photographers in the video as he stands on side of the road. All the photographers there were really impressed with how well the FlipCam did with just a little duct tape on a lic plate!
