I use GEICO.
I have had no troubles with them. I also get a good rate from them. They have many discounts available that they dont advertise, so be sure to ask the rep about all the discounts when are getting a quote.
I used to be with allstate and they suck...period.
Also, if you have renters insurance look into switching to the same company as your auto. This will result in an additional discount (I dont have it now but will be signing up in a few months).
Currently I have 9 years driving, no accidents, no tickets (at least not on my record), and am paying about $100/mo for the WRX and a Corvette with full collision coverage (100/300), uninsured, comprehensive, and a low deductible. Also, with GEICO if your break/crack your windshield they will cover it with no deductible like 2x a year (ask the rep on the phone) and they have one of the highest daily limits on rental car coverage so you dont get stuck in a festiva or something.

This is my pick also they are great. best rate I could fine $900 a year, I have no tickets or accidents in the last 3 years that really helps. they have free towing and $1000 free coverge for aftermarket parts, which helps out some

Here's a neat story about my21 customer service.
I wrecked my car on 8/6/03. Police came out (I know, at first I didn't believe it either) and took a report. Surprise, surprise, the officer felt the young kid in the bright yellow car was at fault and put so in the police report.
DESPITE what the police report said, my21 documented the accident as not at fault in their records and then covered my claim ($8400 to repair my car + $750 rental car). Renewal time just came around, and for the first time since I started with them 2 years ago, my rates didn't drop - but can ya blame em? They dropped $9k on me two months ago. But my rates also didn't go up.

My experiences with insurance companies and claims:
(1) Allstate: cancelled my auto insurance due to their own incompetence more times than I can recall. Two choice examples: for a while they screwed up the billing often (about every 6 months) resulting in my auto insurance payment being applied to renters insurance. As a result I'd be paid up for 6 years of renters but they'd cancel auto. And if they were feeling really nice, they might tell me a month ot two later.
When we moved once and set up everything with a new agent, several months later we were in a minor accident (no real damage) but we contacted them just to check. Even though we'd paid, Allstate said our agent had never sent in the paperwork or check, so we weren't covered. The accident was the other driver's fault and we had no damage, so it didn't cost us anything, but that ended our relationship with Allstate.
Oh, and more importantly, in the two accidents we did have while with Allstate (rear ended on the freeway and t-boned in a parking garage, I guess the truck had a target on it?) they always went for the cheapest body shop possible and the cheapest aftermarket parts possible. The work was crap.
(2) Then we switched to AAA. Rates were ok, but there seems to be a lot of turnover in agents, and no one really ever seemed to have any idea what was going on. Lots of time on the phone for even the most simple things. I was in one accident with them, but in a rental car. They kept "forgetting" to pay the rental car company (like for about 5 months) until the rental car company was about ready to send a collection agency after me, and I was calling AAA every day asking if they had paid yet. Then they finally remembered.
We switched from AAA to State Farm not because of that but for other reasons (price and details of renters insurance actually) but AAA has continued to try to charge us for both auto and renter's insurace for the past 4 months since we switched. We keep telling them we cancelled the policies in August, and the keep sending increasingly threatening ransom notes. So keep this in mind, if you sign up with AAA, as far as they are concerned you are a customer for life, and they will bill you accordingly.
(3) State Farm: So last month some idiot rear ended the WRX while I was out of town. State Farm let us choose just about any body shop we wanted (every one my wife considered was on the list) and had no complaints about using Subaru parts. We're still waiting for those parts from Subaru, and for the other guy's company to admit that, as claimed by my wife, a witness, and the CHP, it was the other guy's fault. I'll let you know how it turns out.

You may find this useful:
http://www.insurance.ca.gov/SAB/Repo...laint/Auto.htm
This gives the short version of what I said above:
State Farm is #3 of 50
Califorina AAA is #11 with over twice State Farm's justified complaint rate
Allstate (#39) is somehow broken up into 3 listings, with a complaint rate over 10 times greater than State Farm.

AAA. Insurance for my '03 WRX is about $150 more per year than my wife's '01 CR-V. I get the multi-car, multi-policy (due to homeowner's insurance through them) discount.
