i asked in a different forum but nobody could help.
Ok i have a 4eat 2003 wrx with only 4500miles on it and i noticed the coolant tank was low so i pulled it out and shook it around and all this spooge looking cream came out from the bottom. the remaining coolant in the tank turned white-ish green. So i filled it up to the top.
I haven't checked the oil to see if it's off color (maybe it would be a milky-grey color, right?) but will tonight. Anyone have an idea of what it is?
if this does sound like the head gasket then where should i goto fix, how much will it cost or is this under warranty. if it is under warranty then what dealer in the sacramento area
thanks, Eric

If your oil is also a cream color, then from my experience, it's either a blown head gasket or a cracked block. As the engine is pretty new, I would go with the head gasket as the culprit.
I would assume something like this should be under warranty. The problem may be getting the car there, as you definitely don't want to drive it with a blown head gasket.

If the sludge was denser than the coolant mix it isn't oil. Proably just a buncha crap falling out from the water and coolant. Maybe assembly lube too or something.

I had this same thing happen to me in my previous car, a 1996 VW Cabrio. The oil and coolant lines were worn away and the coolant and oil leaked into each other's tanks. It was a nasty problem to say the least, and I sold the car to not deal with it. Definitely get it checked out by professionals....or drive it off a cliff.

Thanks, all.
I visited two dealers and had their techs check out what I was worried about. The second dealer's tech walked me to two other cars, one WRX, and a Forester. Both had this residue in the tanks. Apparently, newer radiators have this coating inside to prevent corrosion during storage and shipping. I'm quoting what the techs said. This residue then collects in the coolant tank similar to a catch can.
I think I can breathe easier now.

it turned out to be what Kevin said and what the tech's told you.
ASCscooby: just unscrew the tank, lift it out and flush it out with some water/coolant. then add some more coolant of the SAME TYPE/GRADE!!!!
