Whats cheaper rebuilding or a used motor?
I just got a call from The Shop over in southcity and they said cylinder 2 has no compression. So what do you guys think would be cheaper, rebuilding the motor or finding a used one?

well it would be better to rebuild it if! you were doing the work your self, but in that case just have the shop drop in a used one...my opinion.

You are comparing apples to oranges.
Where is the used motor from?
How many miles on it?
Was it modded?
What are your mods now?
Plan on more mods in the future?

well the shop said the used motor would be some where between 700-900 the guy has to locate one first. He didnt give me a price for a rebuild. The only reason i had these guys do it instead of the guys at my shop was because i figured the discount id get at work was out weighd by the cost of the tow so i just limpd my car over to these guys. If im gonna drop a new motor in it im just gonna have it done at work since ill get a big discount on labor and get the motor at shop price.
It is surprisingly expensive to rebuild a motor even to stock specs. Labor and machine shop cost are not cheap if you pay someone to do it right. Lots of the gaskets and stuff are not reusable (of course).
well, if you're talking about an ej205, you can get complete longblocks for like el cheapo - thousand bucks?
Rebuilding on the other hand, looking at around 2000 for the labor + machining, + parts which is like, I mean, parts cost a lot lol
Even if you had the money for an EJ257 shortblock swap to go 2.5, it's still cheaper to just swap in a complete 2.5 longblock
Bottom line: most shops charge north of $2000 for the labor involved in rebuilding a motor and <$500 for a longblock swap. A lot of the times it's cheaper to get that unless you want to build the motor
