Also some definitions might help since Rally is such a broad term:

Performance Rally = Usually customized cars - drive as fast as you can for lowest times, roll cage needed, as well as helmets and $$$ of mods. These are fun to watch, expensive to do.

TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) Road Rally = Daily drivers, brisk driving for accurate times, often on gravel, but also on paved roads. No helmets required. These are fun to do over a weekend. There are apparently plenty of these in the Pacific Northwest... all those logging roads.

Golden West is a TSD Road Rally and we used the logging roads and national forest roads in around Mt. Shasta, 4.5 hours north of San Francisco, near the Oregon border.

I've always thought of ralllying , like many, as a sport dangerous for the car. With all the rocks flying my paint might be chipped or my bottom will be damaged, that's why I wouldn't take my car out there, but if its paved roads or the roads like the ones in the pics, I'd definitely be interested. Maybe post pictures of the course and post on the regional forums about upcoming events because I never know what the schedule is like. And if it's paved roads i'm very sure my friends would be interested too.

More chance of driving off a cliff at Mt. Hammy

bunch of pussies. ;P

I at least have a good excuse my GF was gimpified from having her gallbladder removed and needed an at home nurse. I didn't sleep the friday or saturday of GW2006. I really wanted to make it, but it would have been too selfish of me to ditch her.
I am already ditching her to go to DefCon the week before her birthday, then the two days after her birthday for auto-x.

I did pre-checks last year on ***-sagging Eibach springs and 17"s. There were several Subarus there running 17"s, as well as a 2004 Audi S4 running check points.

The golden west is a TSD rally, meaning, you are not trying for WRC speeds. I think the probability for damage is pretty low since it low speed gravel driving. When I went, the worst thing that happened was the old richley tuned, carberated Saab had issues with the higher elevation, and one car got lost cause I think the guy may have partied too much the night before.

You don't know me and my luck with deers...

For me, I've done enough to know what kind of damages I could get. Assuming deer is not a problem. If I have an extra set of wheels/tires and front skid plate, I am there!

I think that's a terrific idea. You know Greg and I will be all over that, especially if you can vary the locations over the Bay Area and include a few closer to home... The ones offered by The Rallye Club are mostly in the South Bay and a little far for us to drive to at the price of gas these days.

It's mostly the lack of disposable income that keeps us from entering more rallies.

Me personally:

-Time for such antics
-A car suitable for such antics
-Time

That would be about it. Always dreamed of such. Rally rules. I have held my own offroad runs in my older WRX as well as my first car ('88 RX). Something like a brighton L coupe would be perfect.

You know I'll be there! We have some great back roads around the bay area - let's put them to good use.

Thats exactly why...I can go drive a gravel road at legal speeds with time contraints any day....its simply not an interesting form of competition to me.

If I'm gonna RACE, I want to RACE, and go FASTER than I can do so legally.

I'd guess for that comment that you've never even tried one of these, but hey if you have the cash and gear to go racing, have at it

yeah, that'll take care of that pesky spare cash you have laying about.

Every form of racing costs the same amount of money:

ALL OF IT.

Before the Golden West rally, I thought the same things - but boy, when you've got the car carving in a 4 wheel drift around a gravel corner at exactly the specified speed, that's something else. But it's not a performance rally.. no roll bars, helmets, etc.

The speeds you're talking about would be tough on some of these these gravel roads without that safety equipment. Go wide on a corner and it's a few hundred feet off the road... Boom.

So much for your daily driver

However, going sane speeds, the roads are fine -- brisk on the straights, ginger in the turns. Got to make up times from the slow bits in the corners. Beautiful views, too. Saw lots of wild animals all over the place.

I would love to do something like that, but I don't think my Azenis and coilovers would like it very much Also, I'm not to sure about the whole Time Speed Distance, I'm not saying I would want to go Solberg speed, but on roads like that, nice smooth gravel roads, I might want to go a bit faster.

How would a car set up for track days (road course) handle something like this, say if I put on my stock wheels?
