Yes the winglets eliminate tip vortices and therefore, lessen tip drag which does save fuel. The vortex generators are used to reattach the airflow on the wing surface by making the airflow over the wing turbulent from laminar. This could have been a resultant effect from having that huge winglet.

In laymans terms, detached airflow means no lift and that is bad.

Dude, I'd crap my pants if I opened my window shutter at night time and saw that! Like seriously, a brick would literally come out of my ***, not a rounded brick or anything, I'm talking about the red rectangle bricks that we have come to love, one of those would come out of my ***.
