For myself prolly a 2000-2002 or so SAAB 9-5 Aero sedan. Seriously nice car, good in bad weather, fun in the twisties, 260hp and the last real SAAB. I have a SE wagon with the turbo 3.0V6 and it's pretty nice, but an Aero with the turbo 4 would rock (better engine, more power, better suspension, etc.). The most fun FWD car I have driven. Other than that I agree with the turbo Volvos and it wouldn't hurt to check out an older BMW 325ix - the newer Xi is probably out of price range still, but they are good cars and AWD. I like Audis but my biggest complaint is they are so damn heavy...

volvo 850/v70 wagon turbo. Spiffy, safe, good looking, practical, and decently reliable.
Jeep Cherokee isn't a bad choice either. i recently picked up a cherokee, but I think I am gonna sell it and go for a volvo turbo wagon instead. Keep in mind my budget was less than $4000, hehe, so yeah, jeep was much cheaper choice. The jeeps are extremely reliable, but for babies, I'd go volvo.

One of my co workers has the awd toyota matrix. His is a couple of years old and is always in the parking lot everyday so it must be reliable. Its also in your price range for a car for the wifey.

I know it's not AWD, but it is very spacious, and has a great engine. I'm sure you can find a decent one of these where you are.

The MSRP for the base model is $13.5k, the sport model is $15k.
