Yes a language or better described as a dialect, but way different as far as the way they are spoken.

Tagalog is the national/common language. The rest are dialects (languages of own province) of different origin depending of region in the islands. They would probably have about 10-20% similiarity of words that would have the same meaning, but they all sound like a different tongue.

tagalog is the national language, while ilocano is just a dialect.
the philippines may have thousands of islands, but EVERYONE speaks the national language, along with maybe a local dialect.
so, in that sense, no not like cantonese and mandarin

 

Ok makes sense, sounds similar to Southern slang in the UK compared to Northern slang. Different dialect same language.

yeah, trying to explain the different provincial dialects to someone who doesn't know is quite amusing.
