Vehicle shipping
I'm looking at buying a second vehicle.
But the one I'm looking at is on the east cost. 53 chop top chevy.
I need a reputible, safe, and respected shipper....that's reasonably priced. I'm not paying $1000 to ship this thing.
Any sources? Boston to San Jose.

You will most likely be look at $1000 or more. When I moved down from Seattle, I was getting quotes of approximately 800 to 1000 bux to have the car shipped. Since you are going from Boston to San Jose, it might be more. There are places online where you can get quotes from. If I were you I would just fly over there and drive it back.... more fun and less money.

I shipped the STi with Dependable Auto Shippers from N.Y. to Hayward. I sent it terminal to terminal (meaning, that I dropped it off in Jersey and picked it up in Hayward). It was top loaded on an open transport with full insurance (valuation) coverage for $918.00 OTD. I had no real complaints (other than the stank nasty clutch smell that hung around for a day after I picked it up...hmmmmm). Their website is www.dependableautoshippers.com. If you're looking for inclosed shipping, I think that you can expect $1600 and up. Good luck and post some pics once you get it!

thanks for the info.
I've thought about the fly and drive deal..take a buddy with me.
but you have to remember...it's a 1953 chevy.
on top of that..it's not stock. It's chopped. Side glass isn't finished so I'd be rolling in the snow with no windows in a lowered 53 chevy. On top of that it comes with all the molding and extra rims and tires/slicks. and rear fender wells. So it's gonna be pretty full up and only gets about 10mph.
So you figure. 10mpg., 3144 miles. $1.65 a gallon. Midgrade/national estimate. That's $518 for gas. About $600 for 2 plane tickets one way...I'd need my buddy for mechanical work and company or I might go crazy.
Then add in about 4/5 days worth of food at say....$40 a day and hotels. Just call that another $300.
So I'm looking at about $1300 to drive it home.
If I can get it shipped for $900 I'll do it.
I'd prefer closed but open is fine. I'll just have the dude tape up the windows.
any more ideas? companies.

I think I'd be reluctant to trust anyone who'd charge much less, I've heard all kinds of horror stories from guys who enlisted "bargin" transport companies.
The first one that comes to mind was an engineer we hired about 7 years back who came out from Florida, his pick-up was on top of a rig that went under an overpass without enough clearance- chopped the top of the cab clean off.
Insurance eventually paid for it, but he was a couple of months waiting for all that to sort out.
I can't imagine that would have happened if he'd gone with a more reputable auto transport outfit

If I were you I'd do it personally. And you can have a nice road trip back. Rent a truck and trailer. Maybe even take it off the trailer and cruise around and have fun. If you ship it I'd be wary of low baller shippers as well. Did you see the car in person? Or did you have a person appraise it for you?

I am also sketch towing it back. I'd have to insure the trip somehow. My friends dad back in the day was towing 2 classics....talking mag cover status...literally I've seen the mags..... he was coming from the east cost towing them. One inside..one on a trailer. Some idiot hit them. Both cars burned up in the accident.

Yeah so I looked into Uhaul option also...I was told that the trailer option available would not be compatible for the STi...because it was too low. This is what the website told me...but I'm guess that it would be at least $2000 to bring it back to the west coast via Uhaul (Gas/Hotel/Food etc...). That's tough man...I don't know if I would strap a piece of "Americana" like that to the top of an open transport either. Awesome ride...daaaaammmnnn. I wish I could pull that car off...I've always wanted a chopped, primed merc or 40's ford. Whatever you do, have fun!...and take Route 40 all the way back to Cali...it's longer but you're best bet in the winter. Amarillo is a beautiful city
