Stay stock until stage 2. It's literally 8 bolts to change a downpipe. Shouldn't take more than an hour...

Any tuner recommendations that I can chat with?

Mike at GST in hayward, Ed at EQ tuning in fairfield, or Paul at FW motorsports in Rocklin are all reputable shops on this forum

Depending on the shop and if they do a visual inspection of your turbo back.. you can still pass smog emissions with a stage 2 pro tune. I've been asking about it for a while as I was hesitant to ever go stage 2. If you feel the need to add more umph to your ride, stage 1 doesnt do anything as the stock air box is perfectly capable. My suggestion would be to grab an accessport.. put the stage 1 OTS tune because honestly, the original tune sucks while the OTS tune makes for a more smooth power band.

Stock tune likes to run lean during the CL to OL transition. Not the best. You won't see huge gains, but you will see some, and you'll improve reliability. Mostly a tune will smooth everything out.

Worth it is up to you, but if I were going to stay at a specific mod level for a couple years, I would consider it worthwhile.

Stage 1 tune will pick up some gains I tuned a 2013 wrx all stock and was able to pick up 10-15 whp and 15-20wtq. Also with a stage 1 tune your car will run smoother and have better throttle response.

If you have any other question feel free to hit me up.

Use a gutted OEM downpipe. If you have at least 1 cat, it will pass smog. I don't know anyone that failed as stage 2 in Cali, unless your car is running pretty poorly.

Anyone run smog with a mad dad or other similar catted DP?

I'm going to be doing a motor swap in the next year and I've been leaning toward doing a mad dad catted DP.

If you cover the top of it you can see it's got 2 cats on it from under the car.

They're both hi-flow but I figured most places will just buy this one...

Dude... my car has 230,000 miles on it... the cats were smoked. I needed new ones.

There are definitely significant gains to be had even with a stage 1 tune. Besides the major mid range and low end power gains, the car will drive a lot smoother and be more responsive all around.

Case by case. Technically replacement cats MUST be CARB approved or OEM.

Most techs probably don't care. I know a guy who passed with an intake and DP, and I know others who get asked if they have a sticker for their intake. It depends on the tech and his mood. Personally, I think it helps it it's more of a sleeper. People are very divided about stanced / carbon / stickers / loud exhausts / modded cars / etc... and you get someone on the wrong side of the preference and they'll find everything they can.

I remember you tuned an 0405 wrx with a stock dp/up before do you happen to have that dyno chart?
