Yeah, I'm just worried because I noticed a shudder when starting off in first and on engine braking since I had the gear oil change it done. It felt kinda like when my 98 impreza's clutch was going out, so I was thinking that it might be the clutch. So now I'm wondering if its my rear diff....

Paul is right for 04, 05, and 06 rear differentials using the mechanical rear differential, if not using a specific gear oil with friction modifiers like the Subaru rear differential fluid shown above or the Cusco LSD oil shown below that we are using then the rear differential will be making chatter noises when making tight corners.

Subaru Gold Extra is also a rear differential fluid for non clutch type differentials. They are specially formulated from Subaru that meet both GL-5 and hypoid gear requirements.

Code 3 Suby,

I confirmed with both Kevin and Jerry concerning your issue, your car does have the Subaru LSD rear differential fluid, I just didn't note it in your invoice because it is the same price as the Extra S, and I must have forgotten.

If you have any other questions or concerns at all please feel free to come by the shop or give me a call.

Changing to Swepco synthetic fluid got rid of my tranny whine. It's quite thick until you get it up to temperature, but it really quietened down the noise.

It's not cheap. LIC in Novato stock it. Hope this helps you Paul.

Thats what I was thinking of trying Glen, I've heard nothing but good things about Swepco's oil for the tranny.

we have it in stock, along with friction modifier

*I've never had a single complaint from anyone...only praises. I've personally been using Swepco for over 15+ years.

Here is my $0.02, even if the wrong non friction modifier fluid or fluid and someone didnt add the modifier...it should and generally wouldn't cause a whine noise, like Kevin said...it would chatter b/c its not smoothly slipping (when in a tight turn).

Not having fluid in the diff could cause a noise/whine. Getting rear diff bushings can cause a whine. was it just fluids you had replaced? if so I would not suspect even the wrong fluid (if that was even the case).

As long as their is "gear oil" of some type in that diff....it wouldnt cause a whine. Only when turned in would the plates make noise. In a straight line, only real reason for a diff to whine would be if there was no oil, lack of oil, and/or parts are worn out (tolerance issues).

again, my $0.02
