track wheel set up

im looking to get a new set of tires for the track, right now im running Rota DPT 17x9 w/ Dunlop Direzza Z1 star spec 255/40r17.

i have my stock wheels at home with no tires on them.

would it be better to use the wide setup with the star specs or use something like stock wheels 17x7 w/ Hankook Ventus Z214 225/45zr17. or just get something like the hankooks on the rotas?

Did you like the Star Specs? I've ran them on a few track days and thought they performed well.

I would say get the Hankook's in 255 with 17x9 for track use and keep the stock wheels for off track.

stick with the star specs for now. TurnInConcepts run those tires and won multtiple classes with those tires before going to better rubber. Just try to get as much seat time as possible

I've really wanted to get a pair of Kosei K1 TS 17x9 +45 because they only weigh ~15lbs a wheel and are really cheap, but on the other hand they're not the prettiest wheel either.

I would also recommend going with the Hankook RS-3.

If you can swing it. Buy a track wheel set.

Pro's
Less heat cycling as your not using the same tire on the street.
Sticky compounds
Light weight forged wheels can be had
Less chance to bend since they are only used on the track and not California roads
Unsprung weight = faster car

Con's
Carrying the extra set to the track
Carrying tire jack and tools for tire changing.
Storing the set when not in use.
------------------------------------------

I'd say go with the tire you have been running on the car since you know it better and know how the car reacts to it. Just buy a quality tire pressure gauge and set them to recommended pressures.
Then if you get a set for track use only. Bag them after use and store them in a room temp area of the garage and keep the far away from the hot water heater. The ozone gasses coming off that can hurt the tire compounds.

If you go sticky, Replace the wheel studs, And keep in mind that the tire sidewall is a spring rate. So I'd stay in the 17-35/40-2** in sidewall size. Get the proper tire size for the rim you buy! Make sure you have your car alignment/suspension up to spec as well. If those two are not address your just going to waste your money and any gains you would achieve by going with a track combo set up.

I know lots of people that are really fast on the star specs. I have been using Hankook v12's and love the feedback they give. This next track event I am going bigger and moving from a DOT to a slick.
