I was just at BTH last week. Saw Drag the River and a couple bands I didn't like at all. But oh well. Sometimes you come across good ones sometimes you don't.
Cactus was a cool place but there are still some decent local venues trouncing around. I love the Pound. Even the Edge does ok sometimes in PA. I drive so much that the trek from SJ to SF is nothing. Did it yesterday. Drove from San Juan batista to Fremont..caught bart to S.F. Then took Bart home then directly back out to S.F. in my car long day. I'm beat. Getting a massage in half an hour. Woot.
Anyways..yeah you can catch great shows at tons of places. Slims. Catalyst. Etc.
Oh...and the first to mix rap/rock..it's tough to say but I'd have to say you're on track when you say faith no more. That record was awesome. Still have it.
POD may have hit mainstream in 2kish...but they've been around. They paid their dues. I mean I was watching them an another small band called EDL way back in the day. EDL came up at the same time from the same play ground as Rage Against the Machine. SAME TIME. rage got huge. EDL got bounced from lable to label.....for years and never got as big as they should have. CD's were never that great. But yeah....it's common now but the first I had ever heard were Red Hot and Faith no More. Followed by Rage in early 90's and EDL and POD around 94.

Cool looks like you know your underground isht. When I lived in S.F. my favorite place was a little hole in the wall lounge called "Bottom of the Hill." My friends and I would go to hear new local and not so local indie rock and punk bands.
But I guess living in the S.J. valley is all about the mainstream. I can't seem to find any cool urban spots that suppport originality. There used to be a place called the "Cactus Club but even that place couldn't compare to the hang outs in the City.

Right on I'll check out some of these local venues. Although I love driving my Suby everywhere there are a couple of reasons why I'm hesitant to drive to the city to check out a show, the number one reason being that there's no way I could sip on Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers all night long. That drive back on 101 @ 2:30 in the AM is awful when you've slammed quite a few Buds!
I've been all over the map musically but my current obsession is "Mash Ups / Bastard Pop", which is what you're complaining about. Layering Eminem over the Knight Rider theme song. Missy Elliott over Berlin. Pharcyde over Pat Benitar. It's an art form in and of itself. Some of it sounds like crap. Some of it is too high concept (Eminem and M). But some of it is downright amazing. Sounds better than either of the originals ever did.
DJ Z-Trip and DJ P are probably the 2 best known pioneers here in the States but Soulwax in Europe has taken it to another level. And then there's all the bedroom producers (www.bastardpop.co.uk, etc).
Just like violins, pianos, guitars, drums, electronics, vocals, and turntables it's a musical art form. And as such, some of it is better than others and of course, there's always going to be someone that hates the music form because it's not Rock, Beethoven, Celine Dion, or whatever it is that you think is better than everything else. Elitists!

OK I can dig all types of music but what about the kind thats heroin induced?
Such as groups like BRMC. Ever since I heard their music a couple of years back they've remained on my top ten.

Search for "2 Many DJs", specifically the album "As Heard on Radio Soulwax Vol 2."

DJ Z-Trip, hehe
Me and my buddy Bret used to shoot that opening "Waffle House" speach back and forth to each other for months,"Change the f*ckin sh*t! C'mon! And wheres my waffles??"
I cant stand it when people say music sucks nowadays. Well guess what, if all you listen to is the garbage they shove down your throat on the radio than its always going to suck. Theres ALWAYS good music out there, you just gotta make an effort and look for it, I havent listened to the radio in my car for at least two years and the times that I go somewhere and hear the crap they play on the radio it makes me grimace, I cant imagine people that also cant stand it but trudge on listening to it day in and day out not thinking to find other sources for decent music

I still like hair bands and metal, wish both those genres hadn't fallen off by the 90's and replaced by rap
Also 107.7 FM plays good rock music late friday nights, an all heavy metal show from 9pm
