Tire Q's
I have my own question
I'll be picking up my set of tires soon, should I stick with the stock size 235/45/17, or up it to 255/40/17 since I can fit them no problem
I know in general, you want to run a narrow tire in snow/rain to minimize the contact patch for snow/rain to get trapped, but it would be great to compensate for some of the grip ill be losing compound wise (stock evo advans are as close to R-compounds as you'll get), by going a tad wider

ive used p zero nero ms on 2 diff cars, took em to the snow etc. They did alright, they were really good in the rain, better than stock wrx tires in dry, not amazing in the snow. I think pilot sport is more than fine for rain, just get a set of them and a set of snow tires. You'll be happy later when you can grip in the dry, wet , and snow
I am runnign the 452s right now.. initially I was going to go for the 615 since they look cool in everyway. However, looking at the treads and pattern on the tires.. I don't think they will do too good in the rain

on an evo....ask marcel about tire size on his evo...evo-dadi. You can easily fit 255's. If you aren't planning on spending a ton of time in the snow I'd step up to that size for sure.
Yeah I know I can run 255s without a problem, just wondering safety wise what Ill be giving up by going wider
I have a season pass to Sierra/Tahoe, last year we went up 10+ times, only really hit major snow driving 3-4 times. Expect the same if not a little more this year
Just wondering what the snow traction trade off would be going from 235 to 255, because like I said, in general you want a narrow tire for snow

For that much he can get a set of ASXs and almost a set of 615s

which I would rather do...haa. Actually in that case I'd go 615's and blizzaks.

I've been in the snow with HUGE mud tires. 11 plus inches wides. Just don't drive like a dumb **** and I really don't think you'll be hurt going from 235 to 255. Specially in the snow you usually see going up to sierra. Just stick some chains in your car...suppose to have them in there anyways......if it gets to gnarly. Toss em on.
I'm going up to 235 when stock is 215. i ran 225's last year. I ran 225's on my civic before that and 245's on my truck before that.

id go with the 255's to compensate like you said.
i dont see how people can ever be critical about snow tire performance when you read reviews. im just gonna get something with the rating and thats it. I have to let people pass me all the time in tahoe, im not trying to be the fastest.
the same thing when people complain about rain performance with theyre tires, the rain is never fun to drive in when your feet away from cliffs

yeah but you still want as much traction as you can have.
Pilots definitely are not 220 a tire, they are like 140, and are awesome in the wet too.
No reason to spend money on the 255's for snow tires, i'd get the skinniest tire with the most sidewall that I could

Basically trying to get back the grip ill be giving up from switching from a summer only tire to an all season, but going a tad wider
I dont live in tahoe, so a full set of snow tires is not needed in my case. I just want to retain as much grip as possible since I live in san jose and still drive spiritedly all the time

OneManArmy--For what it is worth... I am currently running Toyo Proxes 4 tires on my sti. While they do not offer the dry grip of the 070, they do very well even for day to day spirited driving. They are M+S rated and very good in the rain. I did take them to tahoe last year during a chain control drive. They performed well. I also really chill out when I am driving in the snow.
Basically I run the proxes 4 year round and save my sticky tires (070) for track days.
Auto Innovations in Milpitas can get them and mount them for you for a reasonable price.

so i think im gettin skinny M+S on stock wheels, then having my summer aka 9 months out of the year tires on a new wheelset.
but the 255 to make up for the harder compound still makes sense.
