He basically told me that cars with tinted windows are more likely to be stolen since thieves like to have tinted windows so they cannot be seen. Also he talked about how dangerous it is for officers approaching cars with tint, which I agree with, but then he went off track and told me that if he impounded my car it would be very costly, greater than $4K in legal fees, impound fees etc. I don't mind getting the ticket, just give me the ticket and let me fix it.

I don't think it was Rosette. Rosette would be all over your *** and give you a ticket for anything he could see.
To the OP, I'm probably gonna go 50 in the front and 35 on the sides and rear. I think 50 up front should be light enough to not have a copy pull me over for simply tint.

I just wish cops wouldn't give imports such a hard time about tint. I mean, come on, like it's so freaking bad to have it dark. I just looked at my coworker's new Saturn and the fronts are uber dark, gotta be be around 35 or darker.

Well I have had the experience of being pulled over for having tint on the front, it is illegal even if it comes from the dealer like that. Front windows cannot have any tint unless perscribed from a doctor. For the most part the cops will not pull you over if you have tint up front if your doing just everyday things. Now if you go to any carshows (HIN) or if a cop wants to be a
d!$k they will pull you over and give you a ticket. It also gives them an easy way in on checking to see if your car is modded or not. My case they said they were looking for a "silver car" so it gave them that as an excuse to pull me over.

Negative, 100% on front windows. Although there are ways to get around this law if you are blessed with acne. If you are taking medicine, go to your dermatologist and see if he could write it off for you saying that you need the tint because the sun can be harmful =). Pays to do your research.

No issues for me thus far. Sooner or later I'd expect to get popped but so far it's been fine. Gotten several other fix its...including illegal tires...which were pretty new RE070's....
anything darker than 35 on the front and you're begging to get nipped sooner or later. shoot even under 50.

I think what the police offcier is saying is that a net tint of 30% ( here 30% meaning that 30% of the light is blocked and 70% is transmitted) is allowed. I of course am still confused and would just rather avoid giving cops another reason to pull me over.

I'll be sure to post some pics once the tint is on and hopefully question #3 is 0.
Probably was a different state or an unreliable source. My dads an attorney and knows this stuff like the back of his hand. I also check out his law books when I'm bored sometimes =p.
I've had 35% all around(except front windshield obviously) since the summer of '03. I've had ZERO issues w/ law enforcement, thus far, for the front tint. *knocks on wood*
I know I've come across the info on the actual CA vehicle codes & whatnot re: this issue on here a long time ago. For some reason, some rediculously high % for the front windows is legal... something like 82%. I'll hunt this stuff down & add it when I find it. I also remember the exception w/ validated info for medical reasons.
*EDIT*
Btw, looks like I'll be heading to Omega soon to get my Momma's ride hooked up w/ 35% all-around. It currently appears to have 30-20% w/ that crappy(imho) mirror finish. The previous owner didn't take it to a very good installer since the left rear is peeling, and my Pop somehow jacked up a section on the rear windshield. Plus since she got a fix-it ticket for the fronts, they got the front window tint removed by someone who left some adhesive residue.
Definitely, do some BEFORE/AFTER pix. Good luck.

I got 20% fronts and 5% rears on my car. No problems from any police yet, even after pulling up next to one w/ my windows up at night. I live in SF.
