TI-83 vs. TI-89. NO! it's not the terminator.

hey guys,
like most students out there, i have a TI-83 PLUS calc. I'm thinking about getting a TI-89 and giving the 83 to a cousin. I hear that the TI-89 is faster, holds more memory, and that it can INTEGRATE!!!! haha.

if it really is faster and if there are a lot more functions and graphing capabilities, i'll order one right now.

thanks for any input.

I have one, it can integrate / differentiate and all that good stuff once you figure out how to use it.

pretty easy. there's shortcut keys that you press it to get nDeriv or the actual integral sign.

so you press the key it'll show up on the calc like::

nDeriv(

punch in formula:

nDeriv(3x^2, x)

and it'll give you the answer, same with integrals.

yes it can do all that, but dont count on using that calculator during tests. I know teachers allow calculators and some nicer ones also allow graphing calcs. Any graphing calc EXCEPT that one due to all it's capabilities.

yeh. that's a concern. i'm actually thinking about using it during my SAT IIs and AP calc test.

i checked out amazon and saw a Ti-89 TITANIUM edition. Thing is BUTT ugly, but it's got 3X as much memory and a lot more functions. it also has a built in USB. cool stuff.

um.... could i ask which highschool/colleges don't let you use it? thanks a lot.

if i'm not going to be able to use it, it'd be a waste of money.

I know all my math and physics and chemistry professors in college did not allow the use of any calculators, well physics and chemistty only allowed simple calculators with no memory functions. So if you are looking ahead to college it might not be wise to spend some coin on a graphing calculator if your are not gonna be able to use it.

As for upper division math and engineering I wouldn't know about the use of graphing calculators, I think my friend was allowed to use one...so you may wanna wait to buy a graphing calculator.

i go to chabot. The main purpose i have the graphing calc is for homework (if i ever do it ) but yea.

LMAO

Got an HP48SX back my Freshman year in college (man, has it really been 14 years?!?!?). You younger whipper-snappers can go look it up now and laugh at the specs, but back in "Da Day" it was THE shiznit

Still have it, and other than a few dead pixels on the display it still works good as new!

all i can say is that i love my ti-89 and am very glad that i bought it.

although it sucks now that they banned all calculators that have text editing capabilities for the PE exams

ti-85.
hahahaha... i feel like impala... my ti's 13-14 years old
as for using calculators in college, depending on the school, i'd say for the most part, calculators aren't needed. hell, we were given most of our formulas on every exam. the problem is: the questions go beyond knowing formulas. it involves deriving new ones, and taking that common knowledge and learning how to apply it to something else...

Ti-83 is good for class and tests. Ti-89 is good for homework.

At Davis most classes have figured out a way to phase out graphing calculators, esp. the TI-89's. I've only had one class that let me use graphing calculators and even then the prof. said "no TI-89's".

thats because you were a biology major. try getting though an engineering degree without a calculator. not gonna happen
