Here are the rules to help keep your car from getting broken into during the holidays, and year round.
Rule #1 - Never leave anything in plain sight inside the car.
Rule #2 - Never park somewhere (mall or other busy area) and get out, then open the trunk and throw your purse, backpack, camcorder, bags from a different store. - This just shows a thief what you have.
Rule #3 - Always put just purchased items into the trunk when leaving a shopping location - this way when you get out of the car at the next location, you are not doing rule #2.
Rule #4 - If you are going to the mall with knowing you are going to buy a ton of stuff, bring someone with you to help hold bags, or bring some type of cart with you to hold extra bags. You do not want to be going into a store, coming out to put the bags of goods into the car, and then walk back into a nearby store to do more shopping, and bring more bags back to the car.
If thieves see you doing this, they will wait for you to deposit your bags into the car, then when you go back into the mall that is when they make their move.....You come back to a busted up trunk or window, and all your stuff is gone.
So, with that being said...........Go out and shop away!

One way to discourage thieves.

check the surrounding garbage cans and dumpsters.
I hate to hear stories about people getting ripped off.
No matter where you are, or how short period of time you're somewhere, the offer is always on the table for thieves.
The most expensive thing I leave in my car is the stereo, thats all. You just can't trust people any more.
if you have home owners/renters insurance then you should be able to file a claim with them.

This sucks. My buddy lives in the Outer Sunset and I'm weary about leaving my new car there overnight. The whole reason I have a Subaru now in the first place is that my Integra got stolen, stripped and defiled at a chopshop over in Oakland.
I have absolutely no tolerence for thieves and would hate to catch the guys who ripped my car off in the act one night.

Damn, that really sucks. My Miata got broken into years ago; they took my wallet (stupidly left in plain view on the passengers seat) and house keys (WTF) and slashed my roof. As if that weren't enough, I became a victim of identity theft as well since I (again stupidly) carried my SS card in the wallet.
+1 for not leaving anything in plain view
+1 for not placing valuables in the trunk after you park your car
+1 for parking in a garage in J-town
+1 for Abu Ghraib-ing thieves (can be substituted with the bruce lee sniper solution if preferred; although note that the bruce lee solution does not involve suffering on the part of the degenerates)

That really sucks. I really hate parking my car on the street in that area. Tons of homeless around and scumbags that come in from the Fillmore. Hope the person that did that gets ran over by a car.

I can't stand thieves. When I lived in Arizona, I was going to be an over-night stocker at Target, they gave us this big hour speach about different things to do when parking your car to help try to prevent thieves from braking into it!! Needless to say as soon as they made that big of deal about thieves I wasn't about to risk my car at a place only paying me 8 bucks an hour to work at... So I quit LOL, It would have taken me 1 1/2 years of working their to get the amount of money I put into my GTI(my car at the time) back if it got stolen, so it definately wasn't werth it lol
