T-Mobile vs. Cingular (Coverage in the Bay)

I'm planning to switch cell-phone service providers at the end of the month (which is when my contract ends).

I'm with Cingular right now under contract and their service is pretty good. The bill each month is somewhat similar to the plans I looked at for T-Mobile.

What would you guys go with?

In the bay area right now, my old company would let use any service provider we wanted and Verizon is the hands down winner for coverage in Nor Cal. with ONE exception, if you live in the hills around Danville-San Ramon, only cingular has sites on the secondary ridges as you move away from the freeway.

Verizon is also expanding sites quickly in the bay area.

T-mobile and Sprint coverage are growing, Sprint has cell sites in the city centers and along all major freeways, not bad as long as you are near a freeway or in a city.

T-mobile coverage is even worse than Sprint - They are expanding coverage very slowly - they are only in city centers and almost no place else...frustrating service if you leave the city you are in.

I have had cingular, and tmobile phones from employers. They never get the same coverage as my crappy verizon LG phone.
For some reason Verizon does not have Nokia phones anymore which sucks, because those phones got the best coverage with verizon.
A couple old coworkers of mine would compare signal with their $20 nokia phones with verizon to my [at the time] $70 LG VX4500 and they would get signal where mine was crap.

I did find a trick on the VX4500 where you press menu-0-000000-4 then option PREV_4 and that forces the phone in to getting better signal some how. Don't know what that does exactly, but it makes my phone work where it normally wouldn't.

Go with Verizon, just watch your phone bill, I have been in contract hell with them cause they freaking switch it on me for no reason some times.

Go with Verizon. I've had it 3-4 years and haven't hardly had any problems. I almost ALWAYS have more reception here in the bay than my friends do who are with NEXTEL and Cingular. Make that more reception anywhere. Some other companies may seem like Verizon's prices are too high and theirs a bargain, but the reception and service is unsurpassed IMO. C'mon, why buy a cell phone if you aren't going to have service where you want it?

Interesting thread. I've been with Cingular since the Pac Bel days...my reception is so-so, but I can't compare with anything else since I've never use any other providers.

I wouldn't mind trying someone else, but I also do not want to use my number. Also, like mcdrama, I like Nokia phones - never liked Sony's (Ericsson) or Motorolas...

My company just signed a new contract with Cingular. I've personally been with Cingular since the Pac Bel days as well and I haven't had any issues. FWIW, Cingular plans on adding a ton of new towers during the next two years. The service is going to vastly improve which is one of the reasons that we didn't go with Verizon. Also, T-Moble sucks in the Bay Area. Tons of dead spots. Verizon is good as well but, you can't beat the size of Cingular's network. Or at least the plan for it. Verizon isn't going to be anywhere near as big in the next two years unless they plan a huge increase in towers. They are both good services but, I'd stick with Cingular. Also, the phone you have also makes a big difference in the reception. Ever since I got my razor, the service reception has been so so compared to my old nokia. I'm kind of regreting getting it now.

Thx for the input guys...i'll look into Verizon later on tonight.

I've been getting crappy call quality with my Cingular/Motorola T721. A lot of static and sometimes it 'skips'.
