my mom has an 08 tribeca. I work at Modesto Subaru and sold it to her and has not had a problem yet. The car drives nice, and feels like it is glued to the road, and the interior is very spacious and comfortable. The rear seats are pretty stiff and sit a little high so depending on who you have back there it might be an issue. There is nothing though as far as mods. We have seen one customer come in with a custom flowmaster setup on the exhaust. It sounded awesome. And to get it straight the tribeca only came with the 6 cylinder and never had a 4cyl in it. Also is nothing like an outback. They are two different vehicles. Working parts and service for 2 years, i have and all of our techs have never had an issue with the 3.0 or 3.6r motors and neither of them have ever had to open one up. The motors are very reliable as long as maintenance is kept up. if you do go with the Tribeca, definitely purchase the extended warranty. It is well worth it and nice to have some reassurance in case something goes wrong. The fx35 though is a beautiful car. Our dealership is right across the street from infinity, and when the techs smash them down the street they sound great. Good luck with you purchase and hope this helped a little!

+1 On a forester =]!
Also work at Subaru. Do not get a tribeca.. Loll fx is a pretty sweet car but I've also ran into a few of them that are also complete crap, not sure weather it's the owner or the vehicle itself. But all just leaked oil.

Update
So was able to Drive a Tribeca, and FXT and a FX35 yesterday...I spent a good amount of time at the dealer, came home 930ish.
Tribeca, drove a 2008 felt ..hmmmm OK...it felt like a minivan that was glued to the road. I really dont like to feel like Im driving a van. The interior trunk space was great...But I kept on hearing alot of noises from the dashboard, and door moldings. I cant stand those...Engine felt responsive, but the more I stood there, I couldnt see myself with it neither did the wife when she drove it, she didnt seem happy and terrified. Last thing I want.
The Forester, man this thing rocks...I love it, its like a STI with a turtle shell. Nice power and handling. The more I drove it, the more I was thinking about a Exhaust, downpipe and a Cobb tune. But thats just it, It had the power, handling, but no space..Felt great though..
The FX35, OMG goodness, I love the engine roar. Loved it!...and very nice pickup and handling. It had the brick (orange interior) but I think it made it stand out. Very nice!..I tested the trunk space by putting in my sons car seat and whatever I had in the G35 trunk (tee ball tees, 2 lawn chairs, 24 pack of water) the sales person thought I was wacko..then I literally test drove the FX35 with all the stuff in the trunk. It felt great!..
I think guys, This is where we are headed. Wife drove it and felt comfortable and she looked happy.
Keep you guys posted, Looking for one under 50K miles 2003-2007 years...

Don't get an 03 or 04 fx. They're not rev up motors and theyre pieces of ****. I had a g35 and a 350z with the same vq and it's no where near as smooth as the mid 05+ with the rev up vq motor.
To be completely honest, if you really want something with space, power, handling, comfort, and beauty, go for the new x5 or the new x6, OR a Porsche cayan 4s. You can find yourself a nice used one with low miles for about the same price, maybe 5k ish more than the fx. But I mean your gonna do payments anyways. Trust me, go test drive those before you buy. You'll see and feel what I mean. My m5 was one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned. And it handled well, and the power was always there when I needed it. If you really wanna go all out, you can get the m series in the x5 or x6 or the cayan turbo, but you'd have to broaden your budget. Good luck to you though.

go for the 07 an up with the fx if you have the money for it! and the power is still great on the FX35 ya? no need to pay more and drink more gas on the fx45
Since you may be considering fx35 which may have later model of vq35 similar to 350z, I guess I could share some experience about that engine.
I currently own 350z which have vq35hr. No major problems. Only issue it had was premature failure of serpentine belt at about 20,000 miles. I had to change idle pullies, belt tensioner, and belt. Looks like that is common problem among vq35hr. That cost me about 390ish to repair on parts. Install was easy though. Anyway, I think that is ridiculous.
Now, I hear some clicking noise from alternator pulley when cold which I didn't replace last time. poop Oem alternator pulley is about $80.
Besides, above issues - no issues. No burning oil, no leaks, no nothing. Pulls very strong all the way up to 7,800rpm.

We just bought a 2011 Nissan Rogue.
Had the Murano/FX on the list as well, but with not much more storage space and a much higher price tag we passed.
Motor is a 2.5L with only 170hp, but the CVT actually makes it quite peppy. Mileage is great too.
I must say I am more than pleasently surprised.

FX35 ftw .....outside of fuel economy but you kiss that off when buying a midsize & up SUV. I drove a 2010; it had pep, good tech, roomy, and didn't feel like a boat when the ladyfriend and I were in a hurry to get home.
