Stupid Sales guy at Livermore Subaru

My friend who is a 35 year old professional goes to Livermore Subaru after work to check out an STi. He was driving his Lexus GS400. He's already pre-approved by his credit union. He really wants to get either an STi or Evo. He just needs to drive one now.

So this sales guy named Shawn tells my friend they need to run his credit before he can go on a test drive. Do you think most guys who are 35 years old are gonna come in and just go for some joy ride for kicks? Of course my friend was pretty pissed and offended and left. That's one place that won't be getting his business.

It's standered procedure, When I was lookin at evo's they wouldnt even let my dad drive one and we pulled up in a 05 viper and he's in his late 40's.

Its just the dealership covering their asses. I went just to look at the pontiac solstice one day when I had nothing better to do and the sales guy offered to let me drive it without me even saying I was looking to get one, I even said "Im just looking at it" and I'm 19! There are also the salespeople that feel they must abuse their power and go "well I must first make sure youre worthy of touching this car I can sell you"

it is standard procedure. people tend to very picky when buying STIs, so the dealer tries to protect them. To drive an sti, it requires credit approval.
Think about it, how many people would go drive them if they knew all they had to do was ask, can i drive an sti?
if anything, your friend should be happy knowing not just anybody can drive the car he could possibly be buying.
and sucks that he wont go back there, sean sold me my car and took care of me. he is a good guy and just doing his job, so i dont really think he is the stupid one here.
if your friend goes somewhere else and is not asked for credit approve for a test drive, well good for them, they let anyone drive off with an STi and add up miles. maybe he might feel comfortable in that situation.

Your correct i worked at Gilroy pontiac buick gmc and we had to do credit checks on the GTO's either if you were going to pay cash. But im paying cash is what they would say.So when they say that we would tell the customer its a backup contract so they wouldn't get all worried.I would make around 400 to 1000 on that car!!!

haha, thats an awesome commission. and for a new car? 400-1000? nice.
my dad's a salesman and worked for livermore audi a long time ago, which is owned by the same owner as the subaru dealer in livermore. so i would hear all about it.

but i get test drives since he used to work for them and they want him back. helped out when i went to buy my car. ;-]

"i'll give you the car for that number if your dad comes back to work for us"

I think if you ask the right questions first, you know if someone is either a roach or an A paper. That guy is probably just a newb.
