The only way u get pulled over in santa cruz is if you look like you are in a gang. Ive had cops behind me with my axleback removed, tinted tail lights a 5% window tint on all 5 windows and not even a look. And this was at 1am on my way home from work.

Now coming home from a bar with the girls family in a tahoe with 22's.....got lit up and FST just cause the driver was mexican and it was like 2am.

Ran Borla headers/no cats/Blitz Nur Spec muffler on my old Impreza L. Did that about six months. Got pulled over on average probably every two to three weeks.

It all depends on CHP wanting to issue tickets and which city you live in. Running a Blitz Nur Spec and a 3inch downpipe with high flow cat I got stopped 4 times and given an exhaust ticket. 2 of the times it was just for the look or the sound of the exhaust. Other times I was driving bad and they had other reasons. I also registered 105db on a rev measured using a handheld db tester.

You're best bet is running an electric cutout. Loud when you want it, quiet when you need it.

It's not wishful thinking. It's my experience. I've been pulled over many times. Never unwarranted. And I've never been given an exhaust ticket, even when I had my N1 fart cannon.

For the last 9 months, I've had race numbers on the side of my car and I haven't been pulled over.

Why? Because I don't drive like an idiot.

Being polite only goes so far, you got lucky not getting cited! I used to think just like you, for years no hassle with my wrx. But when I got the STi, my luck ran out. Been pulled two times in my STi for how it looked alone. No speeding or aggressive driving. Both times I was polite and upfront about the car. One time it was a ref ticket and the other time dude didn't care. It's a crap shoot! There are lots of cops that love busting us, especially since it makes them so much revenue.

Note that he has an NA Impreza -- that makes a BIG difference in whether the cops hassle you or not.

Haha yup my legacy wagon is louder than my wrx but I get less looks because no one suspects a wagon like mine to be that loud

sorry guys, i'm still new to CA. I moved from IA where smog is a made up word.

Out here, You gotta pay to play. Welcome to Kalifornia, where the government Kills your fun and your funds.

You can do it, a fix it ticket is the least of your worries. Its getting state ref and wasting time to deal with the whole ordeal along with reverse modifying.

Having driven the Impreza around with the stock DP and midpipe but no muffler for a few weeks it was surprisingly tame.

I've heard Cars that are stock DP and straight pipe cat back and sounded the same.

But cat back, of any configuration, is legal.

Sound used to be tested at 95db @50ft, but that's been suspended and now its up to a LEOs discretion whether something is too loud.

So you can't get a modification ticket for a straight pipe cat back. But you can for sound.

This is why you can get a sound ticket for stock exhaust on an STi. Seen several threads over the years. Terrible change in the law.
