I agree that a walk in takes priority...with exception; if you were in the middle of placing an order.
For us I answer/book appointments via IM, PM, EMAIL, PHONE, etc...all day long.
We do our best to answer in a timely manner to IM's but the fact of the matter is IM's, PM's, EMAILS vs in person are not the same as far as sensitivity goes. Reason being if it was urgent and needed ATTENTION this second you would call. I say this b/c how can you be sure that someone is sitting at the computer just waiting for a IM, PM, or EMAIL. Someone could be away from the computer for an extended period of time and one can take insult in that b/c you didnt get a response in the time frame you felt necessary.
if its time sensitive, I say call. If its quotes, orders, to chit chat...IM, PM, or EMAIL (as long as you are willing to wait for a response).
I do our best to be on top of everything as efficiently as we can...most of the times it works out, sometimes it doesn't flow as well. At the end of the day we try our best day in and day out, sometimes thats not good enough for all...it is what it is.
I still pride myself/company on our customer service provided here.

walk-in customers come first... i work at office depot and if we're very busy we take care of the people that took the time to come into the store rather then picking up the phone and checking to see if we have 6pencils in stock, 6 column pads, and 2 clipboards to be put on hold...
It's pretty simple. the guy comes all the way down to the shop, you talk to him first vs. someone who was too lazy. Plus if you are on the computer it's not like you have to hang up. You can get your response whenever.........
I'm sorry but this topic doesn't mean anything about customer service....................................and if you are simply buying a part over the comp there isn't that much to be had..........
If you want lessons on real customer service just go hang out at lic for a week.

Over all customer service is customer "service" Trust me, I understand both sides of the story
Playing devils advocate,
I tell my customer to hold. . .
work with my customer who came in. . . walk-in customer didn't buy anything. . .
the other one on hold went to another vendor to order something. . .
BUT, it goes both ways. . .
Ideally, if we have the resources (employees) to provide to ALL customers, I would make sure that happen. Regardless if its just a question or not. WE all know CUSTOMER SERVICE is the reason why we always come back.

Well If they are a parts supplier more than a shop they should not disrespect a phone order. I was thinking you called a local shop or something, whom would be more likely to take care of a known face customer who came in. But if its mainly parts they do thats bs.
