As mentioned before, any full on component system will sound better than a sound bar but having 1 speaker sitting on a shelf is a much more simple, yet effective solution, for what I was looking for... which was less clutter and not having to run cables all over my house

Same here man. I have a 3 year old, hardwood floors and a limited floor plan. All of that mean... simple and clean. No wires. I'm just tired of the stock speaker. Sounds like butt.

I might end up upgrading my tv at some point to a 50 inch from a 47 but right now it is what it is. It does fine.

Now I need to figure out what tv mount to use. I like the look of the low profile ones but I'm thinking I want one that can swivel... side to side and up and down. I'll have to figure out how to mount the speaker under it or to it.

I'm not sure what kind of media console I'll put in there but I'm thinking something along the lines of this...

or this...

But I'll probably build it and paint it black to match my coffee table.

If you are going to all the trouble to make the tv stand/media center perhaps a custom built in speakers are in order? Something kinda like this only more industrial looking. . . .

There's also the ZVOX that sits on top of the stand and then sit the TV on top of.

ZVOX Audio | Great TV Sound From Simple Sound Bar Speaker Systems at ZVOX

I would advise a tilting mount at least because pointing it straight out usually doesn't give the best angle for viewing.

I like that second rack, kind of like an industrial version of mine.

Cool idea, but I'd be hesitant to put my tv on top of a subwoofer, seems like it wouldn't be good for it long term with all the vibration.

That thing isn't going to generate enough vibration to cause any issues. It is hardly what one would call a subwoofer, though the biggest one does get down to a claimed 34Hz with 6 1/2" drivers.

If you are going to mount your TV, also make sure the sound bar you pick up is mountable as well.. that would be a nice setup. I'm not sure how that works with newer sound bars, as they are smaller (skinnier) than they used to be. If you decide to go with media console that makes things nice and simple..

There is no reason the vintage looking boxes on that shelf could not be made into speaker enclosures.

I've been wanting to do something like that for a while but want to include solar power to keep it charged. I'm not sure my technical skills are up to it, but I've been looking at DIY solar-powered boombox instructions off and on for a few months. Now I know who to get in touch with if I run into any problems

Easiest way to do it is to rip apart some multimedia speakers and shove it all in a box. The one pictured runs all day of a rechargeable 9v battery. Find some that use a power supply close to 10volts as that works well with 9v batteries. I have never bothered with solar charging as they work fine on rechargeables.

How long is the battery life on that box? I know you were in the testing phase last time i was reading your write up about it.

I know you say all day but whats "all day"? and what volume is it at?

I just like the idea of being able to be away from a power source for a long time or being able to charge during the day when not in use.

Half volume, 8 hours on one rechargeable 9 volt. It gets a little distorted at higher volumes due to not getting enough voltage. I want to make a rechargeable 12v pack for it.
