If you tell them you are switching from DSL (of any kind) to Comcast service, you would only pay $29.99/month for a year. So you may want to consider it. I just switched last week and loving it. I'm averaging anywhere from 2.5 mbps to 3.5 mbps...

I work from home occasionally and need a stable connection. Thanks for the info, Joe.
And Tommy, I had DSL before when I was in UC & Santa Clara and I always had a solid connect. Maybe it's due to where I live, but it totally sux here.
Edit: Today, my connection has gone down more than 15 times in a period of 6 hours.
Comcast, here I come.

I HATE COMCAST.
they ripped me off. My service was crappy. My equipment was crappy. You sneeze and it would disconnect you from the internet. It is rediculously insecure. I have proof that my computer has been accessed. It is hosed. Doesn't work for ****. Going to have to replace it now.
That being said.
When it worked it was really fast and not having to dial up or log in is nice. But if I do get comcast at my new apartment which is unlikely....I will not be leaving the connection on while no in use.
On top of that..I have to be honest. I am an SBC employee. But not one that's too stoked right now.
I prefer dsl. It's speeds are pretty even. It doesn't flux with how many people are connected at your hub. The service has greatly improved recently. You have to remember that when it first started the installers were learning on the fly the system was new and people didn't know what to expect except fast speeds. It's much more refined.
But the draw back is that if you are really far from your hub the speeds can be kinda crappy.
You guys that have slow speeds you may call in and make sure you are being routed to the nearest center.
SBC as a company can suck..it really sucks right now to work for them. They are just a big of a corporate giant/monopoly as comcast...bigger actually. They don't treat their employees very well....examples like...
your price for dsl is the exact same that ours is.
Our ceo took an 11 million dollar bonus while our bonus' were cut and we're facing a strike.
On the strike topic. If you are considering SBC you may hold out for a few months. If the union strikes your installer is gonna be some person that used to work in HR or you'll call to get help and you'll get an account manager. Shoot they are gonna have my director climbing poles. I'd keep an eye on the news paper. That being said...I'm probably gonna get my *** fired for all of this. I'm at work now and they get pissed if you have a non cingular cell phone.
As for me...and my new apartment. I'm giving DSL a shot. And probably gonna go with the dish instead of comcast cable. That company pissed me off to no end.

I've had SBC/Pacbell DSL at 3 locations now. The latest is only 3 weeks old and I've had 1 disconnect for half a day. but my phone didn't get dial tone either so I just figured they were doing some line work. And it took a day past their promise day to turn on the line.
but besides those two incidents I've not had any problems and the speed here is much faster than the last two locations. I looked at comcast but it was like 40+ a month compared to 26.99.

just ask how far you are from the CO or a remote terminal... the farther you are - the crappier the service will be. In my old apartment, I was about 2000 feet away and had great service. No service interruptions and got a steady 1.5Mb/s down and 256Kb/s up.
My father in law's house on the other hand was something like 19000 feet away (which is past the limit of their aDSL service), but somehow they sent him the DSL starter kit anyways. He's getting about 256Kb/s down and 64Kb/s up and there's frequent service outages.

there's a ton of info there including a CO distance checker.

I have had regular SBC DSL at my house in Danville, for years, and I love it.
I've rarely had probs, and the speed is great.
I still use the old SW though, that Yahoo crap scares me!

I've had SBC dsl for about a year and a half. I get about 1.5 down and 300 up and it's been rock solid the entire time with only one outage in the last year or so. I live fairly close to the CO (central office) which makes the speed and stability much better.
One of the main reasons I went with DSL over cable services is that I use DirecTV
for my t.v. service. Comcast charges you an extra 5 or 10 bucks if you don't use them for t.v. as well
