cable or dsl which one and why?
My AT&T cable 1 year is almost up. time to choose another provider. any suggestions? I was either going covad or earth link (dsl). Att was ok (cable) but..well, i am always looking for somthing better and cheaper
cable - it's fast if you are the only or few customers in your area. you split the connection with whoever is using it in your area.
dsl - dedicated connection. but limited range. the furter away from the central office you are. the worst the connection gets...

I went with the dsl from pac bell. Why? I dont have cable and assumed that getting cable installed would be extra and I live in a place (apartment) that I wont be living in next year. 30 bucks a month for the first 6 months or maybe its 39 i dunno. I really did not look at all the options as you are!!
cable if you can get it.
plain and simple, it's faster than ADSL.
plus it's around $40, vs $50 for xDSL.
biggest downside to cable is they wont let you run your own servers and you dont get a static IP.
NOW, and this is a big now..., att just merged with COMCAST,
around feb 2003, att customers will get notified of the changes. comcast says we will get a few more stuff. what that is, they wont say...
all i ask is GIVE ME HDTV ON CABLE TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw i am 10690 feet away from CO. that's not too bad.
Perhaps I'll go to covad.com they have some decent speeds and several specials now.
Att cable has 29.95 per mo for 6 month special too.
Dam..decisions... decisions...

I am on SBC, and it sucks. I am only able to pull about 160Kbs down.
On dslreports.com, and broadbandreports.com, it shows that I have a 1.5M down speed, but I don't see that?

I've had both cable and DSL. I found the cable to be more reliable. I am ALWAYS resetting the damned modem with the DSL line we have now. Someone mentioned not being able to get a static IP from cable as a downside... well, most services providers DON'T provide static IP's so that's a non-issue. Also be aware that most DSL service providers are middle men for Pac Hell. This could be a good thing as dealing with Pac Hell has always been a nightmare in the best case scenario.
2 - 5 years from now this "last mile" crap should all be wireless.

Then why is my father in law in Japan on Yahoo BB clocking only 800K down on dslreports.com, and broadbandreports.com, but his damn download speed in 700Kbs! All for only $25 a month!
But anyways, the math doesn't add up!

oh i forgot to add, most DSL installs these days uses the PPPOE crap...
so your machine has to authenticate first for the mothership before granting access.
unless of course you run a router box which will do the PPPOE'ing for ya.
