how do you light up a tire?? do you just hold a lighter to it?? it must have taken forever to light the tires and they must have stank like hell.. well i guess you gotta do what you gotta do to stay alive.

Glad to hear that the wife and kids were found.
Pretty damn resourceful family. Not sure how many others could have lasted 9 days out in the same circumstances.
I hope they find the father...hope for the best.

I guess it takes a news reminder every 15 years or so to remind people of 2- no 3 very fundamental lessons-
1) you need to be prepared for survival when traveling in the winter, that means suitable footware, extra clothing, food, water and sleeping bags and...
2) unless you are travelling with others, there is no such thing as a short cut in winter.
and 3) STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE, eventually rescue crews will find you there, but if you wander off without knowing where you are or where you'd be heading you are committing suicide.
Always better to arrive late than never...

Stay on the darned Interstate as much as possible in winter conditions...if you end up having problems at least you will have people driving by that can help.
Reminds me that I need to go get the car winter packs setup this weekend.

A helicopter crew spotted his body face down in the woods of the Coast Range west of Grants Pass.
Kim, 35, had left his wife, Kati, and his two daughters Saturday morning where their car was stranded off a narrow road between Grants Pass and Gold Beach. He never returned, but left what authorities described as a trail of clothing and bits of an Oregon state map as clues to his location. The wife and children were found alive Monday.
Kim's body was found at 12:03 p.m., said Undersheriff Brian Anderson, who broke down as he announced the news.
"We want the Kim family to know that we appreciate all their support," Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said. "We just want them to know our thoughts and prayers (are with them)."
He said the search "for Kati, the kids and for James has gone nonstop, around the clock. This is obviously extremely tough on those who have had an emotional commitment over the last few days here."
