Driving while shooting = Bad.
Yea, no matter how you slice this it's all bad. If you fired a gun down a hall way and missed, just imagine how hard it would be to shoot from one vehicle to the next, not to mention MOVING vehicles. If traffic was moving at the time of the shooting, this guy should be removed from the force and never allowed to carry a firearm again. Stray bullets kill innocent people. Or how about a speeding vehicle with a dead or injured driver behind the wheel. This is just all bad. Some people forget that firing you gun is a last resort.
It's hard to believe a just officer would be involved in road rage and not have gotten the plate at the start of the incident. It's nearly impossible to believe that an off duty cop would continue to travel at the same speed while they pulled thier gun and then MAINTAIN THEIR SPEED and take a shot at them...
Whole thing sounds like poor judgement.
And there's no reason to for anyone to be bias and assume that ALL COPS ARE CORRUPT or that ALL COPS ARE LAW ABIDING.
His bias is coming from the situation as it has been presented. The officer's story doesn't sound like that of a trained police officer. A tempered, experienced, out-to-do-good officer probably would have let his temper and road rage go at the START of the incident prior to the "gun being shown" and got the plates then called CHP.

While I agree 100% that not everything adds up here, I suppose my anger comes from the fact that it seems so many are automatically ready to condemn anyone who is a cop.
I would think, that it should be "innocent tell proven guilty" but unfortunately in the bay area and most of CA, the "libs" tend to jump down a cops throat for anything. We can look back on many times in the news where a officer is blamed for just doing his job because some lib feels "the victim" must have been innocent.
Hell we see it here all the time, people *****ing about "some cop" because they got a ticket for modified this or that. When the fact is they had a modified "X" and broke the law in the first place.
In fact, there's a far better chance that he became a police officer because he's drawn to the power, and considering the rampant corruption that plagues local Police Departments there is a reasonable chance that the officer was lying.
I say that if he was abusing his power, he should be fired--one less pig makes the world a better place as far as I'm concerned.
Oh please. You assuming that the person became a police officer out of altruism is just as bad as him jumping to the conclusion that the officer is lying.

I dont understand why libs r so retarded....i got you back overbear! like seriously..." well hes a cop he could have slowed down" hey the other car has breaks to and if they wanted they could slow down as well...people dont just take out guns for the fun of it they take them out to shoot. the other guy regardless of whether he is a cop or not he has the right to defend his own life in whatever means necessary.

Getting a gun pulled on you ON THE ROAD doesnt come out of a vacuum. Both the officer and the guy in the truck were being douches most likely, and then it got out of control.
The whole point of the training LEO's go through is to RETAIN CONTROL, the officer stopped being a policeman and lowered himself down to the other guys level by not only pulling his weapon, but discharging in almost the least safe situation as possible (short of shooting through a crowd to take down a perp).
I doubt he'll be fired, but he needs to be held sharply accountable.

Overbear,
One thing to remember is that you are on a forum that is populated by mostly young adults who have performance cars. Because of recent history with street racing, police officers have been told by their superiors to crack down on any car that looks like it might "street race". They have been doing a great job with the street racing crack downs, but as with life nothing is perfect and they have target some wrong people. Because of this, everyone has jumped on the band wagon to "hate the pigs". So when any story involving a cop comes out, most everyone on here is going to immediately blame the cop. While I agree completely with what you have been saying, It's not worth it to waste your breathe on a forum like this. I would just stop posting in this thread and let the haters continue to whine. Secretly, you can laugh to yourself when one of them pops up with a thread saying, "Oh no, I was state reffed!".
Another thing to remember, is this guy was probably on his way home from a 10/12 hour shift at 1 o clock in the morning. He is tired and pissed off because he had to deal with his sergeant *****ing at him the whole day, plus dealing with all the scum bags on the street and people who can't take care of themselves. Then, while looking forward to a nice hot shower and a warm bed with his wife he gets this *** hat on the road doing even more ****. Maybe he brandished a weapon first, maybe he pretended to. He obviously did something terrible enough that the officer felt the need to use defensive fire. Until more comes out on the story, I am going to take the word of the man who helps protect myself and my family everyday on the streets, the cop.
