Seized Coilover Lock Ring

Any tips/tricks to get it unstuck?

I have already hit it with a bunch of PB Blaster but to no avail. I read that another trick would be to heat the ring so it would expand a little and be easy go move. The only way I could apply heat would be with an open flame and I am hesitant to do that when the area is soaked with flammable PB blaster.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Got it done on Post #56 (https://www.i-club.com/forums/showpo...7&postcount=56)

Is it seized from rust or cross-threading?

bang it, heavy duty lockjaw wrench worked for mine that was rusted over. Long handle is the key.

to add/clarify that - bang on the wrench, not the collar itself. if you can, add a long pipe to the end of the collar wrench and cinch the threaded tube down.

heating it is good - use a heat gun if possible on the collar only (dont heat the tube too - otherwise nothing will happen - use a cold wet rag to cool the tube while the collar stays warm and loosen it with the long tube (cheater bar) method.

good luck!

heat.. The oil will burn off before you know it.
I have also used carb cleaner, Then pb blaster... The carb cleaner seems to clean out all the dirt and crap then the blaster loosens up the galling.

If you do use heat. Clean off the blaster with carb cleaner. Then just warm up the ring evenly. And not much heat on the shock body.

I'm thinking that there is some dirt of something that is caught up in the threads. The ring unlocked fine and we started threading it up and then it just got stuck and now it won't move.

Didn't think about a heat gun, that's a good idea. Gotta see if I can get my hands on one of those. The one I have is kinda dinky.

I'm also hesitant to put a vice clamp type device on it because I don't want to damage the threads since I will be using almost all the threads. (planning to max out )

It's the fireball that concerns me. I like the heat gun plan though.

Thanks for all the input guys! If you can think of anything else, post it up! I'll be making a second attempt later today.

x2 a pipe wrench with a pipe on the handle for an extension (aka a cheater bar) should do the job. just beware when it finally gives you are likely to end up on your ***. just remember the longer the bar you put on the handle of the wrench is the more leverage you will have to break it free. 2-3 foot should be plenty. good luck man. are your raising or lowering it?

if you cant get your hands on a heat gun a hair dryer on high might be able to do the job adequately

jourdan, get a can of pb blaster and soak it, then use a pipe wide enough to slip over the wrench, put the wrench on the collar and give it a strong shove, should break it free.

Use a long plumber's wrench, that's what I did for my fronts. My rears are still stuck though
