Still would want at least a tune and coilover/shocks, sway bars, bushings better tires, etc
You'll be modding a lot, so in theory, you should start with the better platform - STi.
When I was ordering last year, I was pondering on the WRX vs STi question too. I decided to just go with a WRX Limited for a few reasons -
- Very few mods planned, and none of them adds power.
- The 6spd is nice, but IMO not necessary on public roads / regular driving. HPDE/AutoX is a different story.
- I want to do HPDE and AutoX, but who knows if/when I'll ever put aside time for that.
- I'm weird and I prefer leather to alcantara; Limited trim not available on the 5-door STi.

I've test driven both the new WRX and the new STI and I can tell you that you won't regret buying either of them. Even if the WRX has a few less goodies, it is definitely as good of a buy as the STI. If you feel that the WRX has enough power for you, then go for it, but if you want the extra horses and goodies, then go for the STI. Either way, both cars are very smooth, very comfortable, and handles like a dream.
If you would like, I can get a price quote from Carlsen Subaru for you on Monday.

I actually want the used 08 silver sti from carlsen. Find out why its not been sold yet. I think there might be some history behind that car. ;-) If its clean title with no history I may lowball them just to get it off their hands
I say get a BRZ. But if you can't afford that or are really looking for a 5 door, then definitely get the STi. You'll have that bulletproof 6spd and better stock suspension. It's a better platform for modding and you get the Brembos

I want the 5 door for its practicality.... weird i know but theres been so many times ive tried picking things up with my 08 impreza sedan and 05 lgt where if i had a hatch it wouldve been perfect. so basically i know for sure its gonna be a hatch or some.sort of 5 door vehicle...... i may even hold off first. the wifey wants a new foreser so maybe ill do that first and pay it off quickly. :+)

Used 2011 isnt much cheaper and with the higher apr it almost averages out to be the same as new. only the used 08-10 are even beating out the new stuff and even then its barely beating it lol.
STi if you can swing it. Face it--you'll be modding the car regardless WRX or STi.
Might as well enjoy the add'l OEM goodies, 6spd, DCCD, etc. not sure about the GR chassis, but they said with the GDs, the STi's had additional chassis reinforcement vs the WRXs.
Stiff is good. or so i hear.
envy your choices, but no regrets keeping my GDBF!

Only buy the STi if you want to shift hard/launch/abuse the car on a semi regular basis. Like you said, you want it for the 6MT! WRX will not withstand abuse nearly as well. Otherwise, if you're only going to be daily driving the car with the occasional spirited highway onramp, the WRX is definitely the way to go.
That being said, a used STi would be the best financial decision. Low milage STi's can be had for low/mid 20K. Look for a good private party seller. Good luck
