i know i can get a sport bike for $2-3k, but that's not what I am looking for. the ruckus will be to cruise around and picking up movies at blockbuster. is like telling us to buy a bmw for around the same price of an sti. why didn't you get the bmw?
how far is blockbuster? san jose and the south bay in general has a lot of expressways/fast roads. A lil 50cc scooter might get you into some hairy situations, and since you will treat it as a harmless little scooter you might not be as cautious as you would on a larger bike
You can get a slightly larger bike and turn it into a cafe racer/street fighter which seems to be pretty popular
I wouldn't really feel safe riding the ruckus on a public road in any major city

i know what you mean...I rode a 600rr for 3yrs and having a family now makes it that much harder getting back into riding. starbucks and blockbuster is 3 blocks away from my house. instead of hopping into the sti or the van, a little scooter is all I need.

Man, all the scooter hate
I will definitely be buying one in the next year, but it's going to have to be 150cc or larger for all of the reasons mentioned above. It will be perfect where I live because "downtown" is only 8 blocks away, the skatepark is like 15 and my folks house is a sweet 4 mile drive away on a fun country road. Perfect uses for a scooter rather than my turbo Forester getting roughly 20mpg.

I've had a few Hondas. Super reliable.. never even changed the oil on them. The most fun was the Honda 50 (as in 50cc) which was like driving a bug - very sprightly.
The daily driver was the '87 Elite 250 which was highway legal.. but damn that thing was scary crossing the bridge with the sidewinds.. topped out at 70 which seems to be the minimum speeds on bay area highways, so that was kinda scary, too, barely keeping up with traffic with no way to speed up out of the danger's way. Great on the city streets, though.. Lots of power, no shifting. Body parts would got stolen off it, though, since they're rare and expensive now.
Brian: if you can find a good condition Elite 250 (retirees often have them) I think you'd really love it.

Actually, if you take the plastic bits off the Elite 250 and spraypaint it flat black, it'd look like a crazy *** mad max ruckus.

^ this one's a 80cc - looks pretty good! Hondas might be getting more out of their engines now, but generally, untuned Hondas are:
50cc = about 30-35mph, 1 person max. DO NOT GET THE MOPED VERSIONS which are detuned down to 25mph. If you get the older 2-stroke ones, you'll get more power, but pollute a lot more.
80cc = about 40 max, can ride 2 people.
250cc = about 70 max, 2 people going up the steepest hill in SF, no problem.
