Like Ray, I don't like the monopoly they're building either, and turning skiing & snowboarding elitist again. The only resort I'd still ride is Kirkwood. Hell, if their Kirkwood Only pass was actually cheaper than the Tahoe Local (Kirkwood, Heavenly, Northstar) pass, I might consider it. But BOTH are $549 for adults! 2016-2017 Season Passes -- Vail Resorts Mgmt Co. Where is the slight savings one might expect by purchasing the Kirkwood Only vs. the Tahoe Local? Makes ZERO sense.

And actually, despite the recent acquisition, Whistler-Blackcomb won't be under the Epic Pass till next season. Great news for those who forked over dough for the Mountain Collective since Whistler-Blackcomb stays under their pass umbrella for this season still. So you'll have to wait till next season, Zach.

Grrr... I didn't like this news when Jeff posted the article link about it a couple weeks back. And I still don't like it now.

You both make a grand point on the monopolization of ski resorts.. I remember back in the day just hitting up Diamond Peak or something like that where Heavenly was the GO TO spot at least for me.. However.. having all these options on where to go and having new mountains to ski is definitely a bonus. Yes, it is expensive but I pay that off if I even hit the mountain 8 or 9 times a season considering even day passes have reached like $90+... Kinda sucks one a price stand point I feel that itll just keep on rising no matter what because of demand. However, local families I know within Tahoe seem to be doing fine with it and just purchase the Epic Local Pass. When it comes down to it, I 100% agree however there seems not to be much of an alternative.

See that's the way they want you to think.
But those mountain collective options have been available for a while at a much lower cost than they are now... talking $2-300 less with just about as many resorts available to you and the ones that were usually offered 20-50% discounts if you had the pass.
And it's a "deal" because day passes are so much... that's why they're that much. They want you to think that way so that you buy the passes.
If you're hitting one resort for most of the time... just buy a pass to that resort. That's why I buy Bear Valley's. I ride there 95% of the time. The days that I don't I'll ride on hook up passes or discounts I can find around. Hook ups determine where I ride. LOL!. This year that's alpine/squaw and mammoth.
I choose to not support companies that are trying to ruin the sport purely for financial gain when you can make just as much money without ****ing everyone over.
There are enough options out there that I choose to support those guys so they can stay in business against these bigger companies.
I've read a few articles basically saying that we should ignore it and that there are so many benefits to it (the passes) that it's a good thing. But every single article has been written either pretty clearly pushed/paid for by Vail or by a skiier with their head in their ***.
This is a good example.
How Vail Resorts is taking over the World and why you shouldn't care. - Newschoolers.com
THey're basically saying... well... only rich people should be able to do it anyways so why not make it even more niche. It's an absurd way to think about it.
Companies are losing tons of money because people can't afford to go more than once or twice a year so why buy gear every year? Or at all?
What these retards fail to realize is that it's not a niche sport and it's not "Failing". Many companies numbers have dropped but that doesn't necessarily mean people aren't buying at all. It means there are more options now. So the money is spread out more. And more people ski every year than go to football games in CA alone. So how is that rich white only sport?
What they're doing is pushing it BACK to that kind of sport. It hasn't been that way since snowboarding punk rockers took over in the 90's. But it's going back that way now largely in part to Vail. **** them.

Any fellow park riders on here? From what I'm reading seems like most of you are more freeride. Grew up riding in the midwest, so lapping the terrain park is in my blood since thats all we have out there. Although I'm starting to enjoy bombing groomers and riding powder now that I'm getting older. Falling in the park all day hurts the older you get haha.

northstar is great when they really build it. Heavenly has a proggression park that lots of fun I could bomb that for so long and lines are never busy I think the lift is called Patsys.. Few other spots that are decent but I actually am either a big jump kinda guy or rails boxes and canons. So really depends what you're looking at for a park
Thats why you get to know the lift ops

Yeah I think I rode the progression one at heavenly the one time I went there. Older slow two person lift? It was the only lift in the whole place that didn't have a half hour or more wait time. Best park I've ever rode at is Keystone in Colorado. Private park lift with usually no line, awesome park with everything from small to massive, and they have night riding!

Except that's not what's happening...
gpem92, you're right. Most of us freeride. Only few of us who regularly shred together still lap the park on occasion.
But with freeriding, the whole mountain is a playground! Huck boulders, slide off cut tree logs & stumps, drop cornices, pop off lil side hits, smash open bowls, zig zag thru glades, roll up & down gullies.
Doesn't that sound a bit like a park sesh on natural features anyway?
As far as where... Boreal is not bad on a $15 friday, esp when ALL the terrain & lifts are open. Just use the singles line up Accelerator!
Northstar has legit parks, but I don't like going there for various reasons. Kinda nice that all their park runs & pipe barring The Stash & mini-Stash are along one lift.
Sierra@Tahoe has their parks dialed in too. Lots of variety spread out throughout the mtn. Their boardercross course is TONS of fun for the couple months they're able to have it.
Can't think of any other local resorts that have solid parks.
