Yeah. I would be very careful heading out there if you don't have a local with you. You might look in to the guided cat tours that they do. Good way to get to know some of the not to out there places.

I've set off a couple pretty good size avi's in my years riding OB at BV. I've been buried and I've had to help people out. I've gotten down of the mountain with a broken wrist, dislocated shoulder and at the time what they told me was a broken leg.... on my own.

It's really easy to get lost and really easy to get stuck. There are a lot of little gullies out there. (just ask cliff)

I've had to walk out of a few of them.



I think I know what area you are talking about from Polar Express.

There are a couple of spots that get hiked ALL the time. You can park out there and wait for people and just hike out with them.



And Pete is dead right. You got to have some avi training and equipment to head out there. I don't, so I don't. I have some snow molecule knowledge and 18 years of riding BV but I won't go out to most of the way out spots without gear.

Congrats Ray, I only have had mine for a few days but already I'm really glad to have it, all the mounts they have give you lots of options for rad views of the world of action sports, coolest toy I've picked up in a while

The give you all their mounts. So I'll have a cage mount and all the stickies too. I'm looking forward to trying this thing out on my car too.

I definitely want to take some backcountry classes, get the right equipment and ride with people that know how to ride in the backcountry. Although anything can happen, don't want something to happen out there cause I was being a dumbass and went out "blind".

Thanks for all the info guys. Anyone ever take some of those backcountry classes/guides?

 

Bear Valley does a few free training classes a year. Teach you how to use probes and locaters and what not. Pretty sweet.

I'd advice taking a First Aid/CPR class as well. They're like $65 but you're certified and you never know when you'll need it. I'm getting in a class hopefully next week in Santa Cruz.

There is an agency.. I'll have to look it up. Sierra something or other. You can take snow formation classes, avi training... all that stuff. They have certifications and everything.

 

I did a 3 day trip with ASI http://www.alpineskills.com/ and had done lots of clinic type stuff when I lived in Montana. REI usually has some clinics and classes that are well worth attending too.

REI things are usually free or very inexpensive, ASI is pricey, but very comprehensive and I'd say well worth the investment if you are serious about backcountry riding

 

I think ASI is the one I was thinking of. They do the certs. and what not if I remember correctly. They're mandatory for ski patrol I think. Or at least one of the recommended orgs.

But just to get your feet wet, the free stuff covers a lot.

So stoked. I'm really happy they included the 2 new BacPac bits. The LCD is rad because you can aim it and view footage. The Battery BacPac is sick because you can either run the camera while plugged in to it or use it to recharge the camera. That's probably what I'll do. That way I don't need 2 batteries to get a full days of footage on the camera. Just need to pick up a quality 16GB card and I've got everything I need.

 

Sweet, just remember to get a Class 6 memory card.
