Roadside CHP emissions check, Santa Rosa!
Yeah, no AWD dyno = no go. I would really like to see them targeting some of the crazy trucks up here if they're going to go after anyone. Straight pipe trucks and diesel trucks with "stacks" don't seem to get the same attention as a 150hp japanese car with an intake/catback. I wonder which one is dumping more CO into the air. Strange how that works...

I want to eat kimchi and burritos all day then walk up to the roadside test to smog my a**. As long as they don't put the sniffer in my tailpipe. Optional survey my a**. This is to gather info on which group of vehicles they can squeeze more fines out of. As well as go after the smog stations that passed them.
I saw the one on Hwy 12 yesterday. Thankfully, I was going the other direction. Traffic was backed up almost to Middle Rincon Rd. This is such BS. We already smog our cars every couple of years. I wrote in to the road warrior column at the Press Democrat. Jim said he'd look into it.
I got a question now? So when you buy a car used(change owner) you have to smog the car before sell also when used you have to smog your car every other year, now if you buy a car new you do not have to smog it for 5 years correct? So if i purchased a new car did some mods that got attention etc and came across one of these stations would you be exempt from it?This really is a waste of funds that we could use for a good cause.

Could be worse - Colorado has drive-thru emissions on on-ramps that test real time and snap your rear plate. It seems to be a replacement for going to a smog shop; you have to pass thru 2 sites on different days in the months before registration is due. And they must be "valid", i.e. not decelerating/coasting and not too windy a day, rain, etc.
Congrats, portable, 4-wheel dyno smog machines are now essentially in effect. Cannot believe CA did not think of this first.
Air Care Colorado :: How It Works
RapidScreen testing vans set up at highway on-ramps and other locations where vehicles are accelerating or driving uphill at a moderate speed, because these conditions generate the most representative sample of a vehicle’s exhaust emissions.
As a vehicle passes by, the roadside testing equipment is able to analyze the vehicle’s exhaust in less than a second. Here’s how RapidScreen works:
The vehicle first passes through (3) speed and acceleration detectors, while an (5) image of the license plate is recorded for identification.
The vehicle then passes through the infrared and ultraviolet beams of the (2) emissions analyzer. A laser light source directs the beams across the road, where they are bounced off (1) mirrors and directed back to a detector module. As the light beams are broken by the vehicle’s exhaust plume, the detector module measures the levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen in the plume. (4)The emissions readings are matched to the license plate and an official test record is created.
To ensure accurate, uncontaminated readings, RapidScreen testing vans do not operate during rain, snow, high winds or other adverse weather conditions. RapidScreen also holds to stricter emissions limits than those of a standard tailpipe emissions test.

C.A.R.B. has to be one of biggest money making scams in cali. Why have we done nothing about this type of sh**! How far are we from government mandated cameras in our homes so they can make sure we are not spanking our children too much or eating too much salt or fat? Sorry for the rant but these subtle advancements on our freedoms make me irate. I saw the one on hwy 12. Why the hell would you close down half the lanes on a hwy for some voluntary B.S. like this? Schools back in now and that section of road gets all retarded anyway. Mother Kalifornia is assuming control.
I care. We already pay for smog tests and now their using tax payer money to fund this kind of crap. Why are we wasting police resources on this when there are far better things for them to do.
I care for the same reasons. I'm trying to get something written up in our local paper, but need more info. The more people who know about this, the more pressure can be put on the state to stop wasting this money. If anyone has talked to these guys or knows more info I would really appreciate if you can pass that on to me. I need to know who is running it and if police resources are involved, and if so which police organization.
Thanks! I swear I at least one police officer on Hwy 12 directing the traffice, also. Well, standing around anyways. Both organizations officially deny it, but maybe you can get some inside info.
