I have the 24" gateway HD LCD. Has Mic, Headphone, 2 USB ports, swivels to vertical position. I like it.

Thats what I was planning to do, thats why I was debating weather or not to get the Saumsung or Dell. You can only buy the Samsung 245bw at Frys/BestBuy/etc... However you can only buy the Samsung 244t or the Dell online. The245bw is cheeper by $200; however, it doesn't have CVBS, S-Video,component, 400 cd/m2, and 5ms compared to it's big brother 500cd/m2 and 6ms and with CVBS, S-Video,component.

*Samsung SyncMaster 245BW $470
*Samsung SyncMaster 244t $660

or any other recommendations for $700 or less and has to be 24"

Also, where would you purchase them for the lowest price, the Dell I can only find buying it from the Dell website or Ebay.
thanks!
I tried quite a few monitors and finally ended up with an LG 245wp. Normally I'm not keen on the LG brand, but beyond happy with the Monitor. It is an 8ms which is plenty fast even for the most avid gamers. It is an 8 bit P-MVA panel which means good color, very low bleeding, and nice brightness.

The Samsung 245bw uses a 6bit TN panel, lightnigh fast, sharp text(almost too sharp), while sacrificing color reproduction and overall quality. It looks like *** for movies, and overall just looked like *** to me, and had horrid backlight bleed to top it off. I had one for about 2 days and couldn't handle it, took it back to fry's. My son has a 226cw, it's the same deal, sacrifice speed for quality, although the cw uses a full gamut backlight which makes colors it can reproduce look nice, it still had some strange issues in certain situations.

I haven't had my hands on a 244T, but the 245 left a bad enough enough impression I wasn't interested.

I have the Dell 2407 at work and while its great for working, its has some weird quirks at non native resolutions, so if a game or other application(like credence ASL tester softerware) doesn't support 1920x1200 it looks pretty awful with a horrid banding. Otherwise its pretty much on par with the LG at home.

Anything in the 2-5ms range is a TN panel, just be aware of that. They are fast, but sacrifice quality for speed.

I saw that monitor, but it doesn't have DVI-D, S-Video, CVBS, Component. And I'm running this Graphic Card http://www.cesell.com/product.php?productid=74803 Would you still recomend this monitor? I do plan to do some gaming, movies. Would this be a better buy the L246WP-BN

I'm a liar, I had to go look at the box lol (hindsight being 20/20 suppose I could have just looked in the menu) Mine is a L246WP-BN, fry's had it for $499 about a month ago, $599 with $100 instant off, no rebate. The 245 was last years model, not sure why it stuck in my head.

I went through 7 different monitors before the LG. A few things I learned in my adventures: Glossy screens make me irate. The Samsung power inidicator is enough to drive the pope to drink and can't be shut off(you can shut off the LG one though the menu). TN panels are great for gaming, *** for everything else. Samsung uses different panels on the exact same model(Take for instance the 226bw, there are 4 different panels you can end up with, 1 great, 1 ok, and 2 super ***). Get it from somewhere that has a nice return policy. I'm sure Fry's hates me, but I love them for their return policy, without it I think I would have just settled with a monitor instead of being truly happy.

http://us.lge.com/products/model/det...246WP-BN.jhtml is the one I have. It have VGA, HDMI(with DVI->HDMI cable), component, and the best base out of any of the monitors I tried. Flawless up and down, rotate, and swivel, although if I rotate the monitor(from landscape to portrait) while in an DirectX game windows crashes, something with their driver and changing screen aspect on the fly pisses windows off, but when surfing the web or whatever, it auto switches with no problems.

My setup(pardon the yellow, too lazy to set white point lol)

gaming is so nice when its this big lol

With the 7950GT you should be fine with most games, might have to turn the pretties down a little on certain games, but I tried my monitor on my son's computer which has an x1950pro with old p4 3.2 and WoW was still fine even with the settings maxed.

Thanks for your input, I might pick this up. What is the return policy at Frys? I know BB and Compusa is 14day with retstocking fee (unless defected) Also, I see you got the Ergo. Microsoft keyboard, I was planning on getting that, how you like it?

Edit: frys is 30 day return, but I'm from Marin. hmmmm Also, I have a similar dell laptop in that pic too, haha

Edit2: Its only $499 at Frys.com still and $599 at BB/Compusa.

30 day, no restocking fee, and "I don't like it" is an acceptable reason for return. There's a Fry's in Roseville, not sure if that would be closer for you.

Edit* nevermind Roseville is a LONG ways away I was thinking Santa Rosa for some reason lol

Looks like concord is the the closest distance wise, but Palo Alto would probably be closer traffic wise.

I'm sure other stores will have it on sale as well.

Yeah, be wary of the huge widescreen 24"

We got in brand new 2407s at work over summer, and they were being set up for the partners and some other attorneys. These are guys who love to have every bit of newest technology, just so they can say that they have it.

Well, shortly after, a few people wanted to "downgrade" to a dual 17" or 19" setup because the 24s were simply too damn big.

if you are a gamer you will want an XHD (extreme high definition) monitor.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/technolog...e_hd_home.html

I don't think that list of manufacturers is up to date that is on that page, but the resolution list should give you a guideline.

I'm sorry I know this is old thread and all but if your hubby says a 24" was enough you should have said 1 of 2 things back to him...

1: with that mind set a NA impreza would have been enough too

or to really get him going

2: you need to up grade another 20" then, hahaha. <-just a joke!
