If you want to live in the Elk Grove area or maybe even Rocklin, you could have a very decent house. Not sure what kind of house style you like, but if you don't mind tract homes, then there are TONS of those in those areas.

Good luck.

Housing costs aside, take into consideration that rent is not that cheap either. My first place here was in San Mateo. 1/1, 830 sqft, one covered parking, $1384 a month. This wasn't even a nice place. For a nice rental you could spend up sum of $2000+.

Hey if you can swing it, more power to you. We have visiting daycare (relatives) so a 3rd bedroom is _essential_. The mother-in-law ain't sleeping on my couch.

Just make sure you take into account that your condo will be the FIRST to lose value, the slowest to gain value, and the hardest to sell. Not to mention that you'll be coughing up ~6% to sell the thing. And all the money you've put in to fix things.

What he said. Too expensive, taxes too high, too much traffic, too many liberals.

Sacto was quaint when I went to school there in 1990 (*OLD!*)... Is it really going to be a beehive of activity soon like everybody is saying?

I love the BA, but the $ is crazy!

San Diego was really nice when I visited in the late 90's... Wanted to move there until I saw that the cost of living was nearly on par with Hawaii!

Maybe Seattle or Oregon are the only sane places left to live in the West?

It's getting crazy in Sac. The housing prices are skyrocketing. I've had family that has lived in Sac my whole life, but I only recently moved here myself. In the past 5 years, traffic has gotten rediculous... on par with the BA pretty much.

Wow. Amazing! When I was there it was almost like one might see a tumbleweed rolling down Broadway...

thanks and good luck to you!!! no visiting daycare relatives for me...in laws live like 5 mins away, guess different situations.

30k in a month or so?? not sure where the "losing and slow to gain value" part plays there...since we have moved in, 12 units just sold(half of them with no ammenities)..hmmm, guess they are not having a hard time selling. Also not planning to sell it at all, prolly would just take equity out to use toward a bigger place, then have it rented out...and the money to fix things=$0.00 coz the previous owner already did (ie hardwood floors, painted, kitchen remodeled etc). livable from the get go, some of the places we saw were fixer uppers, got lucky on this one

guess its just different for me

My sister recently moved up to Seattle, so I went up there for a weekend. It was amazing, lush green foliage everywhere, easy going drivers that also possess common sense, much cheaper apartments, and a lot more character. It was basically the exact opposite of San Jose, I want to move there now. Yes it does rain a good amount, but I don't mind that .
