question on Santa Clara Property Tax

Yeah, as GotBoost says, DO NOT WAIT. If the previous owner didn't give you the coupon for this half of the year, you can go online to

http://payments.scctax.org/payment/jsp/startup.jsp

and enter your parcel number or address and find it. Also, start squirrelling money away for the supplemental. You will get it in late Jan early Feb. I don't remember when it's due. Sometime in late March?

The first year is always the hardest for a new homeowner because you have to pay the taxes up front and you don't get to write them off until the next year.

Thanks guys... I figured it out from my real estate agent (I waited on the phone for 30 minutes and still couldn't get through with SCC tax collector). I just pay what is on the bill right now and the assessment will be done next year. I will THEN get the supplemental installment, which is the difference of the actual value and the old value. So it's in the mail already...

Yeah, thanks for the hint to put money aside. I am actually putting my into my company stock purchase plan. I get A LOT more return (minimum 15% at the end of every six months, and it's just about the time my tax is due.

congrats on you purchase.

be careful relying on stock for money due on short notice. stock goes down at the most inconvenient times and can give you a nasty suprise.

I would try to put aside some cash too.

I know the whole stock thing can be risky, but this is a little different.

Intel has a Stock Purchase Plan for employee where we can put up to 10% of our salary every month towards it. At the end of the sixth month, Intel takes the stock values at the begining and the end of the six months. Take the lowest of the two, then sell it to us at 85% of that with the money we have been putting in!

Which means, say August Intel is $20 and Feb Intel is at $30 (I wish ). Intel will then sell stocks to us at $16 a share. Say if I have $160 into in that six months, that means I can buy 10 shares. And if I do a 'quick sell', I get $300 back. So that's $140 profit before capital gain tax.

Even if it was $30, then later $20. I would still make $4 a share before the capital gain tax... Unless I keep it in there until stock drop below the 85% purchase price.
