I don't see many city cops with their guns on all the time - as for the CHP, so far most have been running Ka and some with Laser (but not many). I see the laser guys on the end of the Golden Gate (Marin side) every once in a while. I agree that the cops probably had their gun off when they had the ohter person pulled over...

radar
chp uses KA
City cops, radar signs, sheriffs us K
Laser is county city and county specific. CHP Nevers uses laser unless a city has bought it for them. If so, the lasers guns are only used by bikes, and only within that city. Laser is not a problem in CA. Very few cities have laser because the guns cost between 5 to 10k per unit.
Radar is not very accurate if there are many cars around and a lot of people fight tickets and win. It is especially hard to calibrate the radar detectors for when chp cars are moving. Therefore unless you are on the 5, you probably dont have to worry about chp officers coming up on u using radar, be more worried about pacing. Just because you see an officer on the side of the road without radar on doesnt mean u dont have to slow down though. They have a stop watch system where they watch u pass certain obstacles and punch in numbers into a computer. It then calculates the speed you must have been travelling.
Make sure you all make it out to the meet tonight at starbucks on lawrence and el camino. 7pm.

I find that the CHP uses Ka band, the radar boxes that show your speed limit use K band, Safeway and other grocery stores have K/Ka band signals spewing out from them. Not sure thatthats about.
CHP has K/Ka band guns mount on the front driver side, AND rear driver side behind the windshield ( they look like little white lights ).
I got some cheap $88 detector from Coctco and it works pretty darn good, I have not had it fail me yet! =)
Its a little weak detecting from behind, but when it does it makes a light beep at me.
Its supposed to detect Lidar, but I have not seen it yet.
