on an unrelated note, why don't more people install heat-shields to hide their aftermarket DP's?

It's never illegal to ask. He didn't reach in and pull the hood release, he asked. Nothing wrong with that.

I know that it's good to have a heat shield to cover your aftermarket turbo, but what about a custom heat shield to hide your aftermarket DP?

Had he seen something that made him wonder, he probabaly would have cited the driver for modified exhaust (which is a noise issue, not a smog issue) and sent him to the ref. when you go to the ref he can visually inspect what ever he likes, no matter what the ticket was written for. If the ref finds a flaw during visual... you get the idea.

96db is not extremely loud.

All cops have ears. Not many have car knowledge. Sections 27150 and 27200 give cops an edge over a lack of knowledge. Harrassment is by the cop who writes the ref ticket cuz he doesnt like your car or you or your looks. Sounds to me like this guy was just doing his duty... cocky or not.

Besides, if you end up at the ref and PASS, you have documentation in your car that you are legal for the decible limit.

First off, its 95 decibels, and that is extremely loud! It will only take about 5-10 mins for you to become deaf at a level of 95 decibels. Most cars on the road aren't even close to that level. Also, it can be considered harrassment. If you go get your car check for decibel levels and its not even close to 95 decibels, the Cop will then have to defend himself in court. If he's not an expert in sound levels, he will have some explaining to do. The Judge can penalize the Cop if he cannot defend himself.

I have noticed a bunch of people talking about, "is it illegal for the cop to pop your car?" If your car is completely stock, the answer is yes. But if you have any modifications to the exhaust, then he has probable cause to pop the hood. Just thought that I would clear that up for you all.

All the information that I posted above was either from the DMV motor hand book, my Criminal Law classes, or talking to my friends (which are cops).

Socal Mission Viejo cops suck DiX! I'm not bitter though. This happened 7 years ago when I drove a 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. The cop also told me he pulled me over because "I didn't fit the normal owner of a car like this". I guess white people with long hair and goatees aren't allowed to drive turbocharged awd automobiles. :-X
Denying a search does not equal probable cause.

to the person who said he had probable cause to pull me over because of the sound of my exhaust, we were on the freeway. In addition, his windows were up and we were traveling at around 60 mph. It is extremely hard to hear a bosal single tip on the freeway traveling two cars behind at high speeds. He pulled me over because he SAW that i had a shiny exhaust, plain and simple. Noise was not a factor, although he might've assumed a shiny exhaust means it must be ear deafening.

"one of them lancer evolutions" lmao i thought they were supposed to be trained on identifying cars and mods.as with poppin the hood only the chp and the sheriff can ask you to do that.local cop doesnt have jurisdiction on that.if you got nothing to hide then show it,it will lessen the suspicion that the cop has on you plus you got a better chance of being let go with just a verbal warning.i live close to a chp station and deliver there as well so i know a couple of guys there and aks them questions.

Oh, and the legal limit is 95dB, so hence and here-to-for, 96dB is breaking the law
