Hey Kyle, since you mention Prairie City, there's a rallyx in two weekends (Mar 22, 23). First day is open practice, second day counts. I'll be there.

If you can, make it out as a volunteer for the Reno Rally (late in the year) that Pete's organizing. I'm planning on going up and it was a lot of fun.. our group had a pop-up, a grill and lawn chairs. And this year will be organized proper since psoper's on it.

cool, i'll really try for Prairie City, on the REAL day.

So the RENO rally can be done with just a helmet? or is that full cage super safety status?

It can be worked without a helmet, but competitors will need full safety gear.

Seriously, the best way to get into rallying is to attend a few events and learn about it, who are the fast guys, what are the best cars to start with.
Working as a service crew member, control worker or spectator marshal gives great insight on how the sport functions, co-driving is also a great way to get in on the real action without needing to spend a fortune, and starting out buying someone else's prepared 2WD car (lots of ready to race VW's and such can be had for well under 10G) can get you in the driver's seat really quickly.

And for almost no expense, you can get a friend and come out for some TSD or MonteCarlo style rallies just to get a feel for them, they are still huge fun even though you aren't driving at 10/10's all day- you learn how a driver-co-driver team needs to communicate and you get hours of valuable "seat time", way more than a whole season of Rallycross.

Or you can sit around a whine on the message boards about how somebody else should get this stuff going....

And I don't mean to be picking on you Kyle, Rally in the USA is dying on the vine for lack of participation while even stateside the WRC has this huge (albeit seemingly "underground") cult following, we really need to get more people off their couches and out on the stages, I'd like nothing more than to see Rally events on TV, after all outside the USA Rally is much more popular than Nascrap, but we need to get the grassroots / wannabes realizing they actually can get into it.

This year it's summer Solstice, June 21st, figured it might run better without snow- we'll see....

Good call Pete. Hopefully it won't be too hot now

And I talked to Andy and he's down to work, but he can't make it to the meeting later today. I'll be at the meeting though. See you a little later.

So I want to sign up for this, but I have never done it before. I would want to sign up for Saturday for the aforementioned reason, also because my car has a freshly rebuilt/fragile/expensive gearbox and I don't want to trash it just yet.

My road car is in great shape, so - assuming I have a helmet for myself and my passenger and that my car would pass a standard tech inspection, can I sign up? I read the rules and it looks like I am fine, but I want to make sure. I am a NASA member.

Thanks!

Yup, you're good to go. It's the standard tech checklist, just like autocross.. actually, most of the rallycrosses I've been to are self-tech. Rallycross is like laid-back autocross.

OK! I'm now registered for both days. Tell your friends!

haha my jaw dropped then i LOL'd... anyways...

Rally does need a "drift bandwagon" moment. Drifting has done its damage to people who actually respect driving and the mtns as a deadly place, so we cant really do much worse i dont think.

Unless you live near dirt roads, then i'd be pissed off at kids bringing their subies up and crashing them into me going the other way. Like my situation now with stupid F drifters.

Hopefully the Xgames and the whole DC thing will boost it up. I cant remember what thread there was lately about DC opening up land for practice, like $70 a day, but its a start. Snowboarding is $70 a day for S***'s sake!

no do the REAL day! Prairie City is really smooth pothole-wise, there may be some frame twisters that wont hurt if you dont plow into them. But Prairie city is prepared and was really nice when i went 3/07 i think it was.

The aerial image actually looks like a different location to me, unless im mistaken.

If not then u can do the Saturday thing and ride up with me Sunday.

Its still 50/50 for me, but i havent been in timed dirt for almost a year now.

Nice! I am getting a muffler put on today (was straight pipe) and I think that will be it. Got to make sure my teeny battery is properly tied down is all.

Kyle: note the elevation changes

Also, Pastrana is racing in the Argentina WRC.. maybe that'll get some coverage here in the states?

i've driven on the road that leads to (both directions) that area... countless times. i sincerely doubt that cars would be allowed to travel up the mountain side... but, the next time i'm driving thru there, if i have enough mental capacity, i'll hit my brakes (for once) and ask the local park rangers...

btw - i live maybe 10-15 minutes away from that place.
