Actually I'm a big fan of the .40 cal as well (or 10mm). I think you'd be very happy with the glock or sig, although personally I prefer the sig because internal hammers make me uneasy.
Sig and Glock are both top quality but neither comes cheap.

i use the glock 21 myself...easy manipulation, easy maintenance, larger mags are compatible with smaller versions of the glock...less incidence of malfunctions...grip angle makes it easier to go back on target for follow up shots (which equates to tight groupings during rapid fire sessions)...easy to field strip...the list goes on and on...i would go for this gun if your looking into a reliable .45 pistol

I have a Glock 22 .40 cal and I love it. Very light, very easy to dis-assemble, very durable and very accurate. I reccomend one.

You listed some good guns. It really comes down to feel. I know, for myself, the H&K feeling too big in my smaller hands. It felt really wide and when I shot it I was not confident with my control. I ended up going with the Beretta 96 Elite II. The first round I fired through a rental at the range went right through the X at 25 yds and I've been happy ever since. I really prefer the weight and feel of a metal gun.
That being said, I'm not a big fan of the plastic guns and especially the Glock's. They tend to twist too much in my hands. However, they are extremely well made and uber reliable.
The point is, you need to go out and handle each of the weapons on your list. Narrow down your choice to the few that feel the most comfortable and then go out and shoot them. Many ranges rent the most popular guns out there. That is really the only way to make an educated decision.

I like the HK USP guns...very smooth action and super accurate. I own the USP-9. I have two buddies who own the .40 and .45 versions. All excellent pistols.
Take trip down to your local range(reed's, the gun room, come to mind) and rent the ones your interested in or ask some fellow i-club members to go too the range with you. I'm sure most will let you shoot if you pay for a couple of boxes of ammo and the range fee.

I like all of these:
Walther P99 in .40cal

Glock 20 in 10mm

Walther P88 in 9mm

I would post a pic of the H&K Mark 23 SOCOM in .45, but you can't buy it here
