i gotta throw my 2 cents in for bankman. after having lived in SF for a year, I can attest that bumping bumpers is entirely commonplace. it is not about crappy driving. if i get sandwiched into a spot, i would have no other choice but to bump. i think where you guys are wrong is the degree of "bumpage". If you very slowly (and considerately) touch bumpers, it is all good. however, you can roll into a bumper and that is bunk and will leave a mark.

i will say, though, that i hate driving / parking in the city cause i know that stuff happens... and I dont want to get stuck in a tiny spot that will take me forever to get out of

yeah. some @ss did the same to me. On the front, and the rear. People that hit other cars when parking and dont leave a note or anything are so frustrating. So if you dont care about your paint, or $ 25000 investment, thats your problem, but when you hit my $25000...i mean..........come on!

to clarify my point, i was not talking about hitting other cars in my earlier post when you park! it sounded to me like bankman lightly tapped the bumper, but if he rolled into it that is another story.

no, it doesn't matter, you DON'T HIT OTHER PEOPLES CARS. I don't care if you sweet talk it and buy it dinner before hand, you DON'T HIT OTHER PEOPLES CARS.

Man, this forum is getting rougher day by day!

The thread starter, thebankman, just wanted vent about how a land rover owner was trying to blame a broken fog lamp on him. He stated he just lightly bumped the land rover while parallel parking. I guess if you guys have never ever paralleled parked in SF or anywhere else for that matter. That's gonna happen!

Then you all start to turn on him, like he was trying to do a 'hit and run' or something. I suppose you all are so saintly a driver, you hve never ever driven over the speed limit, or cut somebody off, or ran a red light or bumbed another car's bumper. Well congrats to you! Us regular drivers should just move over and bow down to you!

I know there as been several stories lately where the truth seems have been stretched, so we all may be a bit incredulous about any threads of this nature. I guess my advice to anybody who wants to rant about something better make sure you have notorized photos and deposed statements. Of course bragging about racing (legal or illegal), dyno readouts to justify all those great power mods, or who's good looking should continue!

Remember this is just my opinion, so don't get you drawers all in a bind.

Oh yeah, I recently got a bumber scrap on my WRX. I can't collect since my wife did it with our van! It's just a damn car! Not worth crying/fighting/dying over!

I think the Land Rover guy is a jerk for claiming the broken fog light when bankman says he couldn't have broken it. And I believe him.

My points were in reference to his thinking it's ok to go tapping cars in parking lots - that's what bumpers are for right? The way I look at it, it doesn't matter if he's tapping a Ferrari or a Gremlin, it's still inconsiderate to go around tapping cars in parking lots. Maybe he should focus more on parking better instead of resolving that it's ok to hit peoples cars.

And no, I've never tapped or hit another car in a parking lot. I've parallel parked, driven in big cities like San Francisco and I've driven in small towns in Iowa, and nearly everything in between. My issue with his posts is that he seems to be an inconsiderate person and that he doesn't respect other peoples belongings. That's bull****.

And even if it is just a car, I worked hard (as did many others on this forum) to earn the money for and buy that vehicle. So while it may be "just a car" to you, to me it represents an achievment earned through hard work and commitment to a goal. I take pride in how it looks and runs, and I take offense when other people treat it poorly.

subybus and sonic both make good points. i dont knopw why i am stuck on this thread... maybe cause I am out with the cold??

btw, tapping bumpers in a parking lot is kind of weak sauce, but I am not buying into the "Thou Shalt Never Tap" flawed ideology

It's probably because this thread is teeter on the knife edge of becoming another juicy flame war. Or maybe it already has and it's on the tail end.

I do believe that tapping bumpers in a parking lot is a no no. Usually the spaces in a parking a ample for most vehicles, except for a suburan with a extra large tow hook. But on San Francisco streets forget it! Ever try to park in chinatown on a up slope! I've witnessed lots of bumper kissin' and car pushin' that would send lots members here screaming in agony!

Can't believe this isn't flame.

Think of all the cars (like ours) with screw-in exposed front license plates. If I even brushed against somebody's bumper, it would leave two scratch marks that would go through the clear coat, paint, and into the plastic. That would be $800-1000 worth of buffing, priming, and painting/blending.

And since nobody seemed to mention it yet, bumpers are made to sustain 5mph impacts without damaging the body of the car. That doesn't mean the bumper won't take damage and need to be repaired/replaced at that speed.

yes it is a car. we put priorities in our cars. we love our cars more than life itself it seems @ times.

4 days ago-sitting @ ezogiku(a restaurant)- sitting in window seat. i see this battleship of a BUICK park next to me. i knew what was coming next- his door hit my blue sti. i charged out of that restaurant to teach this guy a lesson(or at least get an apology). i get out there it's some dude like 125 years old with a cane. i was like..... aw man nevermind... i was upset... not neccesarilly because he hit my car...but the fact that i charged out there take action- on an old man. i humbly walked back in the restaurant and peacefully finished dinner...and hearing it from my fiance for being so immature!

no matter what investment we see it to be.... yes it is just a car
