Damnit I hate these discussions.

Most of you aren't martial arts guys except BruceLee, so I'll make an analogy:
"saying TKD sucks is like saying all civics are slow"

blah! Actually I'm bored this summer, so I'm going to go learn stuff in the evenning. I want to pick 2 out the 3: boxing, muay thai, submission fighting.

Someone want to join me? BruceLee?

good video

I don't think you're old enough to have peaked your skill, unless you've done enough gymnastics in high school to be have had a serious shot at olympic quals last year such that you can do "all the gymnastics stuff", or you have trained at a remote mountain location where a coach beat you with a stick You wouldn't have time to drive and mod a WRX if so.

What do you want to gain out of the training? I've been training for awhile now. If you want to become good at defending yourself, then definitely try out Krav Maga. But if you want to learn how to fight competitively, then do muay thai and brazilian jujitsu. A really good school in this area is AKA(American Kickboxing Academy) my friend trains there and I have been there to watch. That school is just amazing! Last year, they have had a couple of people fight in pride. I think a few in ufc and 3 golden gloves. They also have people fighting in strike force. Dont get me wrong, you will learn how do defend yourself also at aka, but will no get the weapons and other various types of self defense that you might get at another school. If you have any questions about training let me know.

Ouch...at least you ARE getting surgery, I know lots of high school gymnasts who jacked up their bodies and never took care of it unless they were drafted into a collegiate program that paid for it. Good luck

Ralph Gracie black belt Dave Camarillo is the Jiu Jitsu instructor at AKA. I can say that he is one of the best instructors around!

Here's another video that is cool. It's mostly board breaking with flashy kicks, but they show a little bit of competition fighting as well. It's all Taekwondo.

Honestly I'd say the best two styles to learn in order to be a good overall fighter is Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu, doesn't even have to be BJJ, but some kind of submission grappling would be good. I took both, but I definately say a SIG P.229 beats them all. HAHA

For BJJ, I am sure AKA is fine, or Claudio Franca's school in Campbell or Ralph Gracie's school in Mountain View.. actually, didn't Ralph get KO'ed by Genki Sudo in Pride recently?

The only person I know from AKA that fought in Pride was Bobby Southworth who got submitted by Vitor Belfort fairly quickly.

Can you clarify?
Yeah I got that feeling because all their classes are mixed levels; serious gyms usually separate classes.

Bobby Southworth does not teach or train at AKA anymore. They had a falling out. I think Bobby is expected to fight in Rumble on the Rock in Hawaii sometime in the future. Both josh Thompson and Kelly Dullanty fom AKA fought in the UFC. Josh won in his Debut, Kelly had the unfortunate luck of meeting up with Renzo Gracie Black Belt Matt Serra and losing by submission. Ralph got KO'ed by Gomi in six seconds, Royler Gracie was ko'ed By genki Sudo.

Yeah, anything with English people and bars, and soccer, kicks major ***

Armlock, JanSolo, so you are saying that some of the better trainers left AKA? I have heard the same thing with Fairtex, though. I was told top trainers such as Bunkerd left having a contract dispute after Alex's death and their relations with Fairtex Thailand declined. Not sure about the truth of course.
