OT: Pacific Bell trying (not so hard) to "opt us out"
Hi everyone,
Just heard it on the morning news where Pacific Bell is trying to sell our personal information to other sources. Their only way of warning us about this is a very small notice in our current bill notifying us that "for our convience", they are going to be sending us wonderful product information. That is, telemarketers are going to be calling us!
This notice is something they call an "opt out" notice, where WE as the customer have to "opt out" of their scheme so that they cannot sell our information. We're supposed to fill out and return that notice if we do not want to be a part of this, but if you've already thrown it away, there is another way to "opt out".
You can call: (800) 310-2355 to remove your telephone account information.
Or if you have their dsl service, you'll want to go here: http://sbc.m0.net/m/u/sbc/unsub.asp
This is important in another aspect, as sbc can also sell ANY numbers that you dial out of your line. So your friends and family can unwittingly be spammed as well due to this scheme.

[edit] you can also opt out ONLINE. http://sbc-pacbell.com/rescpni

That notice in your bill is the only one you get. Otherwise you have to know you're signed up and find the info on your own (which, not-surprisingly, is nearly impossible to find)
Also, it's not just selling our information, it's using our profile to sell us THEIR services when we call for something else, like customer service. As if everyone wants to be sold something when they are calling for customer service...
Things like offering you caller-id, DSL, and services like that everytime you call. Yay.
